Default Oppo BDP-83 SE

December issue of the absolute sound has a small section about the Oppo BDP-83 Special Edition. Improved dynamic range and less distortion via ESS Technology's Sabre 32 Ultra DAC. More information can be found here...and at the links provided inside......

An interesting development. Oppo saw that audio modders were profiting off the regular edition, and figured they might as well capture a bit of that market.

For those of us who already bought a BDP-83, it's disturbing that they are already out with a new version. That's what is so frustrating with the likes of Sony. Panasonic & others.

So I guess if users bitstream over HDMI there is no need for the SE edition, correct?

Well, it's not really a new version but more an upgrade (meaning they will continue to sell the standard version also).

Nuforce even has costing if you want to upgrade your standard Oppo BDP-83 to the SE or SE Nuforce.

Oppo has the upgrade option for 299$ (cheaper than Nuforce so you would end up paying less than somebody who purchases a SE right now).

I think that this is really positive since instead of putting out a completely new product (like other companies), they are using the same player and offering options for Audiophiles.

That's my understanding... As written on the Oppo SE page: "OPPO Digital recommends the BDP-83 Special Edition to customers who primarily use the analog audio output to connect to either a dedicated stereo or a multi-channel surround system. For customers who primarily use the HDMI output to connect to an A/V receiver or directly to a TV/projector, and for customers who primarily use the optical/coaxial digital audio output, the standard BDP-83 is recommended.".

This upgrade is strictly for purists who want the best sound possible from the analog outputs. Owners only using HDMI will likely not notice a difference in any way.

Don't buy the BDP-83 Special Edition . Other modded use the chip is small cost. it's $50 for chip. take $250. that's practice for business.

Well, don't forget that the SE includes in addition to the ESS Technology ES9006 DACs:

- RS232 Wired Control Option (priced at 89$ on Oppo);
- Improved power supply with dynamic servo.

But anyway, Oppo still has to make some profit out of this

Johk,
I have a RS232 wired control. Because My HK receiver has RS232. I don't need it that.

Correct.

The Special Edition is an upgraded analog board and power supply for the analog stage. This is Oppo's answer to all the aftermarket upgrading to the BDP-83's analog stage. For analog enthusiasts this is the one to own. If your only bitstreaming save your money and stick with the regular BDP-83.

The SE will not replace the $500 BDP-83 currently in the line up, this is in addition too.
If your bitstreaming stick with the regular 83 if your serious about analog performance get the SE.

As for the NuForce edition it's the same as the Oppo SE but adds a few more tweaks to the analog section to push analog performance a little further then the BDP-83SE.

I believe it Oppo bdp-83 will discontiuned, replace to new Oppo bdp-82 without analog mulit-channel and HDMI only.

Oppo will plan it lower price to other manfactories blu-ray player $199 to $299. It's practice for business.

Those no different Oppo-bdp-83 and Oppo bdp-83 SE.

Default Oppo BDP-83SE

I bought this and found the analog 6 channel and stereo outputs were reversed (even sub and centre). I noticed this when comparing these to HDMI on SACD. Oppo service seems to be in denial over this. i also found the 6-channel outs overloaded my inputs on the Anthem D2 on loud transients. I corrected this by reducing Oppo volume control to about 50%. They told me I would have problems if the volume setting was less than 100 but this is BS

This is beccause the Oppo controls the volume in the digital domain and any decrease in volume will also lower the overall resolution. They recommend not to go below 80% but really it is a good idea to have it at 100%

Are you doing the Bass management on the Oppo? I am surprised it overloads your preamp unless some kind of bass management is done on the Oppo

i'm not doing bass management on the Oppo. I believed this should only be done if your receiver was not performing this function. Are you suggesting I should leave the volume at 100 and apply trim in the speaker config setup?

I'm not doing any speaker config or bass management on the Oppo. The Anthem does all that. Perhaps I should try leaving the volume at 100 and apply trim in the speaker config?
