Sony Pictures The Blood Ship (1927) Blu-ray

Sony will be releasing the silent film The Blood Ship (1927) on Blu-ray on December 3rd. It'll be a MOD (manufactured on demand) release, but will be a pressed disc.

Quote:
That indefatigable old trouper Hobart Bosworth topped the cast of the Columbia "B"-plus feature The Blood Ship. The villain of the piece is Captain Swope (Walter James). Swope meets his match when old sea dog Newman (Hobart Bosworth) signs on board. Having searched lo these many years for the man who double-crossed him, broke up his happy home, and framed him on a murder charge, Newman finally catches up with the no-good rat - who, of course, is none other than our old friend Swope.

While I'm not familiar with this title, it is f'n awesome that Sony is releasing little known titles like this, Cocktail Hour or Once To Every Woman.

Very happy to see Sony go down this new direction with these MOD releases, hope they continue with more!

I looked around online for any information on wether this film has had a new restoration, and from a Nitrateville post quoting an email Sony's preparatory division sent out on May 31 this year, this got a new 4K restoration alongside three other silents (So This Is Love?, The Way Of The Strong, and The Scarlet Lady - released as part of the Frank Capra boxset and Columbia Classics Vol. 5 respectively) as part of a celebration for Silent Movie Day 2024 and Columbia's centennial.

Here's the information about the 4K restoration of The Blood Ship quoted below:

Quote:
BLOOD SHIP, THE (1927) Feature | 1h 2min | NR | Drama, Silent Film 4k Restoration from best original source materials from BFI supplied Nitrate Print and 16mm (final reel)

Newman (Hobart Bosworth) slips on board the “Golden Bough” with a motley crew shanghai’d by Captain Swope (Walter James). Swope beats his men into submission: the punishment for mutiny is death. Newman wants to catch up with the no-good rat who double-crossed him, broke up his happy home, and framed him on a murder charge. With the help of a man (Richard Arlen) smitten by Swope’s “daughter” (Jacqueline Logan) Newman prods the crew to stand up to the Captain, regardless of consequences. Based on a popular novel, the melodramatic suspense is heightened by the cinematography and production design.

It's nice to see a film that was previously only available as a part of an expensive set be given a stand alone release. I'll definitely pre-order this title, and I hope it bodes well for getting stand alone blus for those other silent titles in that 4K box as well as The Talk of the Town.

Oh so this is included in the forthcoming Frank Capra set? I did not even notice, I simply immediately pre-ordered the latter, quite blindly.

It isn't. This is its first release. It was restored alongside the Capra films SanCarolina59 listed, but it is not part of the Capra set like those other films. Hence this individual release.

Sony have been killing it lately with the early titles. Love all the pre-codes and silents.

I'd not heard of this one until I saw it was currently on sale at Amazon, but it sounds right up my alley. And for only $7.49, an easy blind buy!
