Why does blu-ray need saving?

According to the article many people are happy with the quality of DVD discs and 3D is something unique the a DVD cannot do.

In my opinion Blu-ray is progressing nicely on its own but 3D could be the clear differentiator.

Not if you believe all the hate 3D is getting. Seems like the majority of ppl, especially on this site, detest 3D and pray nightly for it's failure.

Their is really no reason to dislike 3D since it does not obsolete 2D, but it is just an extra feature that is available.

Some people do not care for the 3D glasses.
Some people have just invested in non 3D HDTV equipment and are just annoyed they don't have the latest devices.
Some people get eyestrain from wearing 3D glasses for a long period of time.

If done correctly 3D can be an exhilarating experience (Avatar). If you just do 3D as an add on it could actually distract form the film.

Do some people have a valid reason for not liking 3D - yes, but for most it can be an enjoyable experience.

To hope 3D will fail is just plain silly.

I agree 100%. None of those reasons even come close to explaining the unbridled hatred for 3D that I have been seeing in these forums.

I think that Blu-ray does have a dramatically better picture than standard DVD.
Of course, some are better than others. But the really good ones blow standard DVD quality out of the water. I have the streaming option from Netflix too, and so far I've not seen anything off of there that even comes close. Plus, I always lose my connection at least a couple times during a movie, and picture quality fluctuates. I'll take the Blu-ray disc over the streamed content any day. Maybe other online sources are better? I don't know.

Agree - think it will be a few years until streamed media is a serious alternative to a physical one. No doubt though that Blu-ray is the final physical media to be released.

I absolutely agree about the Blu-ray picture quality being way better. However for Joe Six Pack on his small TV DVD quality is sufficient so 3D may be the technology that will cause him to go to Blu-ray (some day).

Yeah, that's kind of what happened with me, actually. I had just gotten a pretty nice set up just before blu-ray started out. I was disappointed to find out my new TV wasn't good enough for Blu-ray. I wasn't about to get a new one at that time so I put Blu-ray on hold. But now seeing 3D come to Blu-ray I new it was time for me to upgrade. And I have to say, I'm not disappointed in the least. I love my new home theater. The screen size is slightly smaller than my old set up. I went from 64" to 55" But it's a small sacrifice for the gain in quality.

Thats because some people are techniphobes who hate technigical growth. They see things like CG effects, digital technology, and in this case 3D somehow are ruining what they percieve as the good ol days when everything was great and story based. In reality bad movies have always existed (Ed Wood) and to blame them on modern tech is silly and modern tech innovations are only meant to give filmmakers more tools to make a movie how they want. Whether or not a movie is any goods is still and always will be dependent on the quality of the filmmakers, script, story, pacing, cinematography, and direction.

You mean like Ebert LOL. People love to quote him on why 3-D is bad. If it were up to Ebert films would still be in black and white, so I'm not too surprised he doesn't like 3-D hehe. I can't help but laugh when tech gets blamed for the quality of films today.

Actually for the best 3D experience go see a Broadway play (no 3D glasses needed)!

So, you're saying real life is better than TV?! Impossible! You just made that up.
