Default Is there any reason to keep my PS2?

Ive owned a PS3 since January, and i've been thinking....is there really any need for my PS2? Should i sell it for like 50 bucks and buy a game or a couple BD's? what do you think.

I would say this: It depends.

It depends which PS3 you have. If you have the US or Japan version then I would say ditch the PS2 since the PS3 has the same hardware for running PS2 games. If you have a European version with the software emulation for PS2 games then you might want to keep it around if you consistantly play your PS2 games. Me personally as soon as I got my PS3 I sold my PS2.

YES:
PS2 can be modded. PS3 can't (yet)
Some PS2 games don't run properly on PS3.
to add to your collection. I still have my PS1

I have some JPN PS3 (first batch, which means EE chip is still there), and had some issue with some games.

I only have 2 or 3 PS2 games still, and they all work fine on my PS3, so my PS2 was sold a little while ago.

If you get one of the PS3's that is out now, you will have hardware backwards emulation that gurantees you 100 percent backwards compatibility for PS1 and PS2 games. If that's important to you, I suggest you pick one up sooner rather than later.

Go to a place like EB/Gamestop that allows for trade in and trade in your PS2 and whatever other odds and ends you can for a boost.

If you can afford to, I certainly recommend the upgrade all across the boards. By that I'd say "No, there's no reason for you to hold on to your PS2."

Yer i got the software emulation on mine, even tho all the ps2 games i tried work im going keep mine just incase my ps3 kicks the bucket (which is highly unlikey) but also because it has sentimental value like my NES.

My PS2 is in the spare room now, hooked up to a different TV. My PS1 is in its box safe and sound, just in case.

The only downside is you get used to the PS3 controllers. My PS2 ones have extension cords hahaha.

although the ps3 is backwards compatible with ps2 and ps1 games, it isn't perfect.
also a ps2 can be modded, so if you live in a file-sharing friendly region of earth...
and from an energy consumption standpoint, a slimline ps2 runs about 45W while a ps3 runs up to 380W (and idles at about 200W), if you pay your own bills you'll care.
unless you're hard pressed for that $50, i'd keep the ps2 simply for your ps2 collection.

If you have a lot of PS1/2 games, keep the PS2. SO far, I've not been able to run a PS1 game on my PS3 without it skipping.

I gave mine to a cousin (5 years old) who doesn't have a console. I would recommend the same (not too a cousin, but someone young who maybe cannot afford a console yet to at least get brand awareness out there).

Are you really going to use the PS2? As soon as I got my PS3 I never used the PS2 console again. I tried playing the games on my PS3, but the PQ was so awful, similar to SD television that I had to give it away. The extra $50 I could have received for it in trade in was so insignificant that it would be better to just give it away.

$50 covers some tax at least. Better than nothing.

I still use my PS2 because I'm a cheater. I use cheats to speed up my RPG experience because I don't have time to spend 60+ hours on a game but a few well places cheats and I can widdle that down to 30-40 hours.

FFXII was a great example, they have a cheat to make you run super fast and I probably saved at least 5 hours in walking alone, but I didn't ruin my experience by making my self too powerful or giving myself key items.

I guess I should deprive my cousin who cannot afford a console so that I could cover the tax on an already $600 device. Please be realistic.

my ps2 was in "like new" condition. I sold it for $130 including an extra dua shock controller, ps2 memory card, ps1 memory card, logitech wireless controller, verticle stand and component HD cables. I had all packaging etc.

you can also always just use it as a gimpy DVD player for an extra TV.

i'm keeping mine because i have a NTSC-J ps3 so i can't play any of my ps2 games anyway (argh).

Do the right thing and not the greedy thing.

DONATE YOUR OLD VIDEO GAME PLAYERS AND GAMES TO YOUR NEAREST CHILDRENS HOSPITAL.

The cancer floor has really appreciated my complete and in good working order PS1 and PS2 (with some of my unwanted games) systems.

Helping those sick children is always the right thing to do.
