When I owned a 360, I had the network adapter hooked up and never had any real issues with lag, or anything whatsoever. I was probably 20 linear feet from my router.

The 360 adapter is relatively inconsistent. Some are good and others are not, it looks like you have a bad one, call up MS and complain, if you moan enough they will exchange it.

You can get a Wireless N Adaptor for it now, though it isn't cheap.

But it's great streaming high def media wirelessly.. really worth it for me.
If you're only going to do Xbox Live, stick with the regular adaptor.. you can get it cheaper now that the N adaptor is out now too..

I'm using one of the old white ones and I've never had a problem with it.

I don't experience any noticable lag on my 360... or anything else that is connected to my network wireless for that matter, which is everything...

Yeah I had the wireless adapter before but only because I could not run wires. When I reconfigured to be able to use cables I switched for reliability reasons.

By reliability I am referring to my router. I hate my router sometimes.

elite wired, pro using the wireless through 3 walls, 75ft. or more. runs fine. that's with 2 laptops, both 360s, & a desktop on my network on a busy night.
