Platform: Exclusive to the PLAYSTATION®3 Computer Entertainment System
Genre: Action-Strategy

OVERVIEW

Valkyria Chronicles combines strategy elements of tactical role-playing games with real-time action sequences. All of this is played out in an innovative and beautiful visual style.

Built upon the new "CANVAS" engine, developed internally by SEGA Game Studios Japan, Valkyria Chronicles' stunning 3D graphics resemble a watercolor painting in motion, taking full advantage of the processing capabilities of the PLAYSTATION® 3. The power of the PLAYSTATION® 3 also allows the development team to exploit the full potential of this new engine, giving players many different stunning environments to explore. A new type of tactical battle mechanic has been specifically designed for Valkyria Chronicles. Known as "BLiTZ," this gives players freedom to strategically move around the environment and attack enemies using real-time controls, something never before seen in the tactical role-playing game genre. The new "CANVAS" engine technology, the "BLiTZ" battle concept and an epic storyline offers players hours of exciting gameplay.

STORY

Embark on an epic adventure through beautiful environments and battle legions of troops to save the small country of Gallia from total destruction. Valkyria Chronicles™ is set in a fictitious continent reminiscent of 1930s Europe on the verge of a great war. The game follows Welkin and his fellow soldiers of the Federation’s 7th Platoon that are fighting against the Empire, who is intent on unifying the continent under its power. The emergence of the “Valkyria”- an ancient race with special powers thought to exist only in legends, turns the tide of the war and the Federation’s ability to win and a hope for a better future hangs in the balance.

FEATURES
  • “CANVAS” Graphics Engine - Cutting-edge graphics engine producing breathtaking artwork fully leveraging the capabilities of the PLAYSTATION 3. Creates images that look like watercolor paintings in motion.
  • “BLiTZ” Tactical Battle System - Experience strategic maneuvering of units as in conventional RPG gameplay; add the excitement of action games with real-time controls to command each player.
  • Epic Storyline - Players will immerse themselves in the epic struggle for freedom, as the fate of the world lies in the hands of Welkin and members of the 7th platoon.
  • Customization - Over 100 customizable characters allow players to create a variety of platoons to suit each battle’s needs.
  • Beautifully Rendered Battlefields - Players explore 30 different environments, using each terrain to gain advantage in battle.
  • Features both English and Japanese (with English subtitles) language tracks. All game text and menus will be in English only.

I have a feeling this might be one of those that doesn't hit outside of Japan. I'm very interested in it myself.

Sounds like an anime twist on Jagged Alliance (not that this is a bad thing - Jagged Alliance is one of the best and most innovative turn-based strategy games ever made IMO).

A few new screenshots of this game here.

Definitely looking good.

Release date is April 24th in Japan so hopefully the rest of us get it later this year or early in 2009 (as long as it comes out before FF XIII).

Very stylized. I like that. I'll have to look into this if it ever comes to the US.

Is this the same game as Valkyrie of the Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles that's coming out in Fall 08?

PS3 Fanboy
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/02/25/...stern-release/

"So we've previously said we were going to cry if we didn't hear a US release announcement for Valkyrie of the Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles; fortunately for us, and for you all as well, we won't have to break out the tears because both SEGA America and SEGA Europe are making our wish come true by bringing the game over to the west. Announced and renamed for the west as Valkyria Chronicles, this PS3-exclusive should be coming our way by autumn 2008.

For the uninitiated, Valkyria Chronicles is a strategy RPG that incorporates the "BLiTZ" battle system. "BLiTZ" takes a unique twist on the traditional turn-based system by injecting bits of real-time movement and actions. As much of a paradox as that may sound, it really does makes sense once you see it in action. The game's gorgeous imagery is probably what gamers have noticed most about the game; the artistic style is brought out by SEGA's CANVAS engine which is said to take full advantage of the PS3's processing capabilities.

The game is set in a fictional world, and follows the story of a soldier named Welkin. The major conflict is a familiar backdrop with two huge forces waging war: "The Empire" and "The Federation." A smaller neutral country named Gallia, has the most unfortunate position of being right in between these two huge factions. What will happen as a result of this? We don't know, but we're certainly curious. Be assured, we'll be keeping a close watch on this one."

Looks like we get our US release

I am hoping for some English videos soon (or at least subtitles) so we can see more what the game is really about.

Hopefully Yakuza 2 and 3 make it across too..

I think I'll reward this action with a purchase of Yakuza 1. I was going to get it anyway after some 1UP editors' recommendation.

Sega has moved themselves off my "you suck" list with this announcement, now if only we could get a release date for Yakuza 2 and 3
