USA Made in America (1993) - August 11th, 2015

The comedy Made in America (1993), starring Ted Danson, Whoopi Goldberg (and a young Will Smith), will debut on Blu-ray on August 11th courtesy of Fox

Quote:
Richard Benjamin directed this farce that plays like "Guess Who's Coming for Insemination?" Whoopi Goldberg stars as Sarah Matthews, who runs an African-American oriented bookstore in Oakland. She is raising her daughter, a beautiful high school student named Zora (Nia Long), on her own after her husband's death many years earlier. As a result of a science class blood test, Zora discovers that the man she thought was her father actually wasn't. Instead Zora finds she was the result of artificial insemination. After researching the ***** bank's records, Zora discovers, much to the surprise of Sarah and herself, that the anonymous ***** donor is in fact, Hal Jackson (Ted Danson), a loud, crude obnoxious (and white) used-car dealer who advertises on late-night television. Zora visits Hal while he is filming a commercial and Hal brushes her off. Enraged, Sarah tells Hal off, but after meeting Zora he now feels a paternal itch. Not only that, but he is beginning to feel an attraction to Sarah. ~

Awesome news! I've always had a fondness for this movie for some reason. I guess I can take it out of my sigs 'most wanted' list now

Odd that Fox is releasing this instead of Warner...

I just watched this again last night from the German BD release. Not sure why but it looks like this somehow got into Disney/Fox's hands now. The DVD release was from Warner (as was the original VHS).

It's a fun little movie! Goes by fast and includes early performances by Will Smith and Nia Long. It's one of my go-to feel-good movies. Thought something strange happened with the German BD release, somehow they sped the movie up where it winds up 5 minutes short of the original 111 minute running time. If you have a very keen eye/ear for such things, you'll notice the voices sometimes sound a tad off. Movement doesn't seem "fast" or jerky to me but I definitely caught the voices at a higher pitch at times. I've never seen a BD release where this was an issue. This one appears to be impossible to find now anyway. Would be nice to get a proper release as the clarity of the BD was pretty darn nice and it didn't seem to be an old master at all.
