Default Reference Level-What does that mean?

Sorry if this has already been posted I did a search and could not find anything.

Ok so what does this mean and how do I know if I can acheive this with my set up?

Ia am using an Onkyo 605 and the HTIB speakers & sub from the from this system http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=HT-S780&class=Systems&p=s

In my experience it means too dern loud by a long shot.

However,... the more people in the theater the louder the sound has to be in my theater. That may be because people diffuse or absorb sound as well and produce noise of their own.

It is the volume in which the sound is mixed by the studio. It is typically denoted by 0 on your volume knob if your volume counts up to 0 from a negative number.

This is only true if you setup the 0 position to be reference volume. That is... If you play the test tones and then use a SPL meter and adjust the channel volume offsets so that 0 becomes reference volume which is 75 or 80db depending on who you ask.

No AVR can know the size of your room and therefore the amount of amplification would provide reference volume without this type of calibration. Though... Some AVR's have calibration modes to setup this very type of thing.

There is a complete explanation of reference level at the beginning of post #1 in the Understanding Dialog Normalization thread.
