Default Blu-rays you haven't bought yet because the Audio isn't lossless.

Hi Everyone!

I was wondering if there is anyone else who hasn't bought some BDs (mostly, if not exclusively WB) because they only have a DD lossy soundtrack???

There are a couple of movies I would like to have, such as Babel, but I refuse to buy them with a lossy soundtrack, for I strongly believe that
lossless audio should be mandatory on BDs.

After all, isn't it supposed to be HI-Def Picture and Sound?

Which movies are you still waiting for to be released with a lossless soundtrack?

Cheers

I can't remember any off the top of my head.

However, I hope no one lists "Superman", because even though it's got a lossy track, it sounds pretty good.

Same goes for Terminator 3. Awesome lossy track.

But yea, lossless should be mandatory.

The Halo movie kinda interests me, but it being lossy makes me not interested for sure.

aviator
goodfellas
fringe season 1
last samurai
swordfish
training day
star wars clone wars season 1

list goes on and on and on... I too feel like lossless should be mandatory on BD's, I got a few that are not lossless, but that's before I really understood the whole lossless/uncompressed vs. lossy thing... I was just like oooooooooo... shiny new BD must have...

You're really screwing yourself over on this one. The picture is stunning and even the lossy track is leaps and bounds better then a Dolby Digital track on a dvd.

I purchased the UK edition because it has lossless (True-HD 5.1). Very good price (about 14.00 US) and worth it for the AQ (that crane scene is great). PQ is very good also.

The only BD I have with a lossy soundtrack is Planet Earth,

and I suggest WB better re-release all those movies with lossy audio codecs
with a lossless one soon!

I had no idea SW-The Clone Wars only have DD. That sucks, although I have never watched the Clone Wars.

I am skipping all Blu-ray releases now that do not include lossless audio. It was tolerable when only a handful of titles existed, but any release now is an automatic skip if it does not have lossless audio. The studios that perpetuate lossy audio are going to get hurt in the marketplace. Warner has lost hundreds of dollars from me for not putting lossless audio on their television shows. Starz is also a disgrace with their recent wave of horror catalog titles.

Dang! Do you know of any threads that list all region-free European releases? I keep on finding stuff time to time that I had no clue about....

Lossy compression degrades quality. Lossless compression is like a zip file, it's identical to the original.

Babel was one of my first blu-rays as it is one of my favorite movies. However, it does deserve a lossless track since it has one of the best scores I have ever heard. But so far, I've stayed away from Speed Racer among others.

Not exactly. Let me try to better explain this in the most simplest way possible:

There's lossless, and there's lossy. There's also compressed and uncompressed.

Think of lossless as raw audio information, straight from the source (like in a music studio). Think of lossy as degraded audio information, like a .mp3 file that just doesn't sound as dynamic and nice as a .wav file.

Now let's talk about compression:

Compressed Lossless (TrueHD, DTS-HD) is like a zip file and uncompressed lossless (PCM, WAV) is like the real, raw file. They are both the same thing in the end, and sound exactly the same (though a minority of people will think different here, but it's a moot point). So whether it's compressed or uncompressed makes no difference IMO.

However, the lossless and lossy is what does make the difference.

Think of it this way:

Which would you rather have....audio information streaming at 640 Kbp/s (which isn't enough for dynamic scenes..you'll hear lots of clipping, muddled information, or very "tight" and compressed information) or audio streaming at 3-8 Mbp/s (dynamic, booming, loose, clarity)?

Yep.

PCM is uncompressed lossless, and is "theoretically" better than compressed lossless. Whether you can agree or disagree on this is a moot point, but it's still lossless and awesome-sauce.

its not "theoretically" better than anything. lossless = lossless. or it isnt.

PCM sounds more powerful to me ,i know you're going to start me on volume normalization but it does to me.
