Default UK vs. US Shawshank Redemption

Are the encodes the same? Is it essentially the same disc with different packaging?

Not really.
US version: VC-1 & TrueHD
UK version: AVC & 640K DD5.1 (Very, very solid PQ)
I have the UK version and cannot watch the extra.

What about the Japan release? Same encodes? It looks like that one has a normal keepcase, so I'm tempted to import it. I hate those digibooks. It's also pissing me off that the prices seem to be staying higher on digibook releases, even things that have been $5 DVD catalog titles for ages now, like Falling Down.

I own the Japanese release (also from Warner) and it is the same as the U.S. release, just without the digibook.

Falling Down is available in the UK from Warner without a digibook.

Default Japan release

I also hate digibooks, cheap cardboard that will break down over time. Much prefer the standard case. Can't play the extras on the UK version, but may go that route anyway. It sounds like all the extras work with the Japanese import, is that true?

That release isn't distributed by Warner and I've read the quality is inferior.

PAL extras and no lossless audio. The PQ however, is identical.
