Octavia Spencer is in negotiations to star in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Cold War movie for Fox Searchlight.

Del Toro is writing, producing and directing the currently untitled film. The otherworldly love story is set against the backdrop of Cold War era America — circa 1963.

Del Toro had been weighing several films, but this mystery project was always a top priority, according to sources close to the project. Shooting will start sometime this summer.

Spencer is on board to reprise her role in “The Divergent Series: Allegiant” and is also set to play God in “The Shack,” which bows later this year. She also recently filmed Marc Webb’s “Gifted” opposite Chris Evans.

She also recently landed a lead role in Fox 2000 “Hidden Figures.”

She is repped by WME and attorney Karl Austen.

Not really. Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth both took place during the Spanish Civil War.

Granted, the Cold War was not a "violence" war but still. He'll do ok.

I agree. He is one of the few directors where I can say ive enjoyed every one of his films.

Michael Stuhlbarg in Talks to Join Guillermo del Toro's Cold War Love Story (Exclusive)

Michael Stuhlbarg, last seen portraying real life characters in Trumbo and Steve Jobs, is in negotiations to join the cast of Guillermo del Toro’s untitled movie for Fox Searchlight.

Del Toro is planning a shoot this summer and is deep in the casting stages. Octavia Spencer and Sally Hawkins are already in negotiations to be on the roll call.

Details are being kept in a bunker, but the project, written by del Toro, is described as a mysterious and magical journey set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963, with an otherworldly love story at the center of it.

Details for Stuhlbarg's role were not revealed.

I love Del Toro, but I'm getting a bit fed up with the whole "it's a love story" schtick. Crimson Peak worked because it was very romanticised in design, with loving odes to gothic literature and film, but the film as a love story wasn't entirely the most interesting element.

I've always said that Guillermo del Toro's talents seem to be best-utilized in smaller films, with tighter budgets that force him to tap into his own ingenuity and creativity to really make them fly. His last two major studio outings, PACIFIC RIM and CRIMSON PEAK, were both greeted by slightly-above-average reviews and box office receipts that didn't exactly blow anyone away. His next film, though, is being made over at Fox Searchlight- which is Fox's indie-minded shingle. It's called THE SHAPE OF WATER, and it sounds like a return to PAN'S LABYRINTH territory for the Mexican filmmaker. THE SHAPE OF WATER centers on a mute janitor, played by Oscar-nominated actress Sally Hawkins (BLUE JASMINE), who falls in love with an amphibious man creature at the lab where she works. He's being held captive, and so she enlists the help of her neighbor to try to break the creature she loves out of the facility. In doing so, she exposes the creature to an outside world that may actually be worse for him than the captivity he was liberated from. The film is set in 1963, during the Cold War, and is said to be something of a fairytale.
Tracking-Board is reporting that another Academy Award-nominated actor is on the cusp of joining Hawkins in THE SHAPE OF WATER, and that would be Richard Jenkins. The veteran character actor, who garnered a ton of respect and praise for his work in 2007's THE VISITOR, has a resumé that goes back to 1974. He's perhaps best known for his work on TV shows like SIX FEET UNDER and films like CABIN IN THE WOODS and STEP BROTHERS. Sally Hawkins is starring in the period movie along with Octavia Spencer and Michael Stulhbarg.

Michael Shannon is in talks to star in Guillermo del Toro’s untitled movie for Fox Searchlight.

Del Toro is planning a shoot this summer and is in the casting stages. Sally Hawkins leads a roll call that also includes Octavia Spencer and Michael Stulhbarg.

Shannon’s character would be the villain of the piece.

The actor, who never seems to stop working, is in theaters right now starring in Midnight Special, the sci-fi thriller written and directed by frequent collaborator Jeff Nichols. He also appears in the filmmaker’s racial drama Loving, which will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

His Elvis & Nixon, in which he portrays Elvis Presley opposite Kevin Spacey as President Richard Nixon, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this week.

Shannon is repped by CAA, Byron Wetzel Management and Morris Yorn.

According to IMDb, the title of the film is The Shape of Water.
