Default Vietnam Bootlegs

My Sister went to Vietnam for a couple of weeks, on the last couple days she went into some shops to pick up some Blu-Rays... she asked the sales person if they were legit... of course he/she said "yes yes" lmao.

She got;

The Hurt Locker (Which has a Blu-Ray.com 'News and Update' about its release on the back)
Saving Private Ryan
Shutter Island
The Wolfman

All are BD25s instead of 50s, and they all have the wrong cast listed on the back, and the discs have that funny plastic smell that bootlegs always do. Slipcovers look nice though, embossed and all glossy...

Just goes to show even in a legit looking shop you can still get fooled.

How often do bootlegs get into legit retail stores? do legit retail stores even exist in Vietnam?

I know the cell phone picture is not of the best quality, but don't those covers look poor, indicating a bootleg movie? I make custom covers that use parts of the original art, I can't get the same detail as the original artwork and it's quite obvious that it is reproduction artwork.

She said she bought them in a big shopping mall... I told her next time take a good look at the cast listings on the back, its usually a dead give-away (Shutter Island has credits for Death Race ).

Oh well, they will get use.... four cases for other BD cases that have cracks/damage..

How can she NOT know those are bootlegs with fake cast lists etc?

And asking them if it is legit? Do you think they would actually say "No legit, Bootleg only!" That would be something though...

I keep telling my aunt not to buy any iPhones, videogames & consoles overseas but she never listens & always ends up with junk that doesn't work properly I also had a friend who bought me Top Gear seasons 1-10 and I had to point out why they weren't legit copies, it was easy enough to tell from the cover alone

Amazing how many people can't tell the difference Those blu-rays you've posted look slightly legit from a distance, better than the usual stuff you find anyway but if I was there I could pluck them out without needing to ask if they were legit. Its a gift

Pretty much if you buy any kind of DVD or Blu ray from Vietnam, China, Hong Kong..etc, then more than likely they are fake!!!

But there are official HK blurays & DVDs which makes things more confusing. The only place where you can buy them is online apparently

i disagree, it is very hard to find pirate dvds, blu-rays or vcds nowadays in Hong Kong.

most people out there buy original VCDs which are really cheap HK$20 ish (1-2 US$) and they come out very soon after the films shown at the cinemas.

The quality though of vcds imo is rubbish though

Well she didn't look for one, and she doesn't really know the all the actors names... and yes, the store owner did point to others and say they were DVD9 Down-Conversions from Blu-Rays, and pointed to more dvds and said these are fake. But she insisted the Blu-Rays were legit.

I had to register a new account just to reply this. When was the last time you visited Hong Kong? You can barely find any pirate DVD/BD in HK nowadays, you might be able to find those pirate Japanese porn DVDs in those remote areas in New Territories, but that is it.

You can find some of the older BDs in low prices(around 80 to 120 HKD)at the smaller shops. But definitely not at the big name chains like HMV or CD Warehouse, those places always try to rip you off.

This is the first time I hear off pirated "real" Blu-ray Discs.

How is the picture quality given they are BD25 discs?

actually over there, many bootleg dvds are manufactured using legit discs and equipment, usually done at night when the legit operations are closed. This is why its so hard to tell the difference.

A little sunlight and they may noticed the errors on the coverart
