Default Name one highly underrated movie

Preferably an old or a obscure movie please

I'll start with this.
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.
I'm continually amazed that this was released in 1977, first of all the performances were great and believable, especially Cary Guffey who "played" Barry (the kid) was a near miracle, thanks to Spielberg ingenious way of directing.
What I'm more amazed about are the special effects, the scene
[Show spoiler]were Roy is in his car and a UFO is hovering above him was a simple effect, the car was just on a "gimble" (not sure what it's called) and the camera was just locked in place,
however simple that was made, it was just incredibly brilliant! It gets me everytime, my jaw just drops.
Also the five note melody which John Williams made (out of thousands) is also something that has stayed with me since childhood, I just love it.

The reason why I think that this movie is very underrated is because I feel that not that many appreciate it, the special effects alone rival that of many of the movies today, it just so damn believable to me, which is more important to me however simple they are made. The BD is very grainy, very very grainy but I prefer that over digital manipulation any day.

Discuss this movie if you please or name one movie you feel is highly underrated.

One of the few Steven Spielberg films that put me to sleep. Love the special effects and the wonderful score by John Williams....but aside from that.....

Close Encounters is indeed great. Great BD package too. In fact I don't know if it qualifies as overrated - at least back then it got a lot of attention.

Since we are already in space, I will submit... 2010: The Year We Make Contact. No, it isn't a game-changer the way 2001 was, nor is it as artistic (for lack of a better word) as its older sibling. The makers of 2010 wisely decided not to try to duplicate 2001, they made a more traditional movie with dialogue and everything. At the same time, they kept the story going and maintained enough of the spooky feel of the original to make 2010 seem legitimate. If anything 2010 is more enjoyable than 2001, in a "let's-go-to-the-movies" sense.

Thunder Alley (1985) A great sex, drugs, and Rock & Roll movies with an awesome soundtrack. You Tube this movie and listen to the Roger Wilson guitar solo near the end of the movie when he is onstage.

Good acting performances by Clancy Brown and Leif Garret.

A very underrated and not well known film. It was never even released on DVD, only a VHS was available.

Grosse Pointe Blank

Really liked this, but almost no one around me heard of it. Which is hard to understand since it stars John Cusack. Although I would imagine quite a few here have seen it.

Gattaca. One of the best sci-fi films of all-time, although it's science fact and not fiction.

Black Sunday is one of the most under appreciated thrillers of the 70's. It's a fantastic film that nobody ever talks about and has the late great Robert Shaw and Bruce Dern is really creepy playing a psycho terrorist.

Hah, I had forgotten all about that one. One of my favorites back in the day.

Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
A cinematic masterpiece that some think is boring. But I think it is is brilliant

Maybe it's more appreciable with repeated viewings. The acting is solid but I expected more from the movie itself.
