Default MovieStop Blu-rays... beware!!

Has anyone else who shps at MovieStop noticed this. I went buy MovieStop yesterday and traded in a couple of the free Blu-Rays I received from the Buena Vista promotion. After searching the store and seeing that there really wasn’t much that I needed to have, I finally settled on buying something anyway, Reign of Fire.

The clerk said they only had one left I noticed he went around to the back of the counter and pulled out a disc and grabbed the case from another location. I then watched in disbelief as the clerk pried open the case and tried to “force” the disc back into the case. The case was still only partially “sealed” as there was as the plastic was slit up along the opening. He then tried to ring it up for $29.99. Usually MovieStop has really good prices on their discs, but I could not justify $30 for RoF.

I looked at him and said “Wait just a minute. Did you just put that disc back in the case and now you are going to try to sell me that disc as NEW?” He said their corporate headquarters told them to “gut” all of their BDs. I had been wondering why every single BD that I picked up on their shelves had a slit right up the middle of the case opening, now it just made sense. I told him that if I was going to buy that I would ONLY pay used price and he said he couldn’t do that. I also gave him back my store credit and he returned the discs I had attempted to trade in. Before I left he practically begged me to call their headquarters and complain, because even all the employees think this new practice is ridiculous. Ya think so?!! He even went out of his way to get their corporate number (770)590-1765.

So if any of you buy BDs at MovieStop…Beware.

Its gamestop, not all areas have a moviestop but the same crap just with movies instead of games. And gamestop does the same thing with games, if its on the shelf, the game is in a drawer, but they still sell it as new. But for arguements sake, if people didn't still buy the opened games or movies, they could not get away with it. So I guess we can blame ourselves as well.

Yea they have recently branched the movie portion of the business off and are starting to open MovieStop's. They probably felt GameStop eliminated people who don't buy games from stopping in....

i dont think moviestops will come to my area considering all my gamestops all say the only ones getting rid of the movies are the ones near the city. and yes that is super stupid.....you do know they do that with games too right???? yea i picked up my ps3 w/resistence one launch day and he tried the same thing with resistence.......complete BS. try flipping the situation on them, buy a new game, beat it, take it back a few days later and say you want a trade/store credit b/c it is new......see what they say, then reply with "then who can you sell me a new game for 59.99 when it's opened/unsealed.....its used then buddy not new" i hate that "ok for me, but not for you crap".

IF IT OPENED IT'S USED PERIOD.

Blu Rays seem to get funny treatment in a couple of different places.

The Barnes N Noble by me has them behind the counter displayed like fine china. I asked the guy where the Blu Rays were and he's all "Behind the counter...which one to you want to see." I was like..."All of them...what do you have."

It was a really wierd and uncomfortable experience as I checked them out long distance and he stared at me.

They were all 39.99 and I had most of them so I left.

It was just creepy. Way to introduce the new format to the masses.

Thanks for the info OP, it's a crazy practice. One that probably should be reported to the Better Buisness Bureau as well.

Moviestop and Gamestop are both owed by the same coporation. I just can't imagine paying for an item considerd "new" when the case and disks have been separated before hand. New = factory sealed.

These type of practices are absolutely despicable. I agree with Rabidhunter, this is the type of thing that the Better Business Bureau needs to be involved with, as it's blatantly unethical business practices. Even if nothing came of it, just knowing that you blew the whistle on them is some small solace, and who knows....others may follow suit.

That's no joke. If we, the consumer, were to purchase a blu-ray, cut a small slit in the shrik wrap, on the side of the opening, and then return attempt to return the movie, they would say, "Sorry, we can only exchange this for the same title, but we can't give your money back. It's been opened." What a SHAM!!

Usually MovieStop has great prices on their BDs, but that's not worth it to me, or many collectors who want their BDs F&@%!&G UNOPENED!!!

Well, that and GameStop stopped paying cash for movies a while back. Store credit only.

I had that same argument with a GameStop clerk last week when I purchased NHL 2K8 for my PS3; they had a "new" copy and a used copy. Both boxes were open and didn't have a disc in them, but the "new" copy was $39.99, while the used was $27.99. I asked them why they opened the boxes, and their response was "to prevent theft". I pointed out that by opeing the boxes, the game isn't "new" anymore. The clerk said it was because it hadn't been played. I simply rolled my eyes and bought the used copy.

Never buy "new" from GameStop.

I noticed this too when I went to pick up Juno and AVP last Tuesday. I asked about it and was guarenteed that if I pre-ordered the movie, they would not "gut" the movie. I was told since these are held behind the counter anyway there would be no need to do it. Maybe its a crappy ploy to make you pre-order from them if you want a new, sealed copy?
