Default Stream Video to PS3 from PC via Ethernet

Hey guys,

Is it possible to stream video to the PS3 from PC via Ethernet?

I have the 40GB PS3 and a old(ish) PC and a MacBook (if that is the better choice)

It appears you have to Transcode with that, can you not stream the .ts or .m2ts without transcoding?

Thanks though for the link

Oh and this is a direct connection to the PS3 not via a router

i have m2ts files on my pc from my hd camcorder (panny sd9) and i stream with no issues besides a few laggy parts.
id rather use my usb to flash card reader to watch videos or just plug in my 1.5tb external hdd to my ps3 to watch the movies

i use pms server more for the dvd movies i burn in ISO formats from dvdfab and have saved on my laptop

I know Windows 7 will stream/host over a local network provided that the media files will play natively on the PS3 (no transcoding).

PlayOn will transcode and stream video fairly well.

+1. PS3 Media Server is great for this. Plus, I also use PlayOn to serve up a ton of great sights on the web. I used PlayOn for Netflix until the official Netflix software came out too.

For what you need, get PS3 Media Server.

PS3 Media Server does a pretty good job of detecting what doesn't need transcoding and just passing them on to the PS3. It'll even transmux some files, which means if it's a contain the PS3 doesn't recognize (like .mkv), but the audio and video are in a format the PS3 can play, it'll just rip the a/v stream out of the .mkv file and make the PS3 think the files are an .mp4 it does recognize. That way it doesn't actually recompress anything; it's as good as native playback.

It won't work if you need something like subtitles in a .mkv file; in cases like that, it'll automatically transcode.

pms will also pop up a special folder for each directory so you can override the transcode auto-detection from the PS3. It's pretty impressive really, give it a try.
