Post Help with news on finding the anime Metropolis on Blu-ray

I am trying to locate this movie that has been long overdue for a Blu Ray release. However, I can't find anything on its existence or the possibility of existing.

Any help, news, or tidbits are appreciated! Thanks!

I actually been to that site.

My concern there is where is the buy feature and if the movie has English Dub. I prefer the dub version.

Thanks for the assist!

the tech specs says Languages English - PCM 5.1 Surround, strange there is no Japanese audio track listed

but yeah, with out a buy button....that being said, anime news network only lists UMD and DVD releases for Metropolis. So its more than likely the bluray doesn't exist

I figured as much. Seemed odd that the only site that does for some reason have an image of it on blu ray doesn't allow purchasing.

My gut feeling told me there was no blu for this movie.

This production needs to happen. One of the classic anime films and no blu ray love.

Make this happen sony! You gave us Paprika which was most appreciated, but we need this title as well!

Sony is sitting on Steamboy, Metropolis and maybe Memories as well, three visually wonderful films that I would love to see on blu. The way catalog titles are being treated though makes me think we won't see them for a long time...

It'd be nice to see a domestic release of Metropolis in 1080p or at least a Japanese release with optional English Subtitles in 1080p.

I used to have waited for years for this movie on Blu-ray, until I gave up and imported it from Japan, made some custom Blu-ray subs and burned it back onto a BD-R.

It sucks that neither of these films are on Blu Ray with English subs. Get a move on, Sony!!!

I think Cyborg 009 is dead to them. 1 8 episode Uncut release and 2 4 episode Toonami Edited Version releases, you can tell that it must have done very poorly for them.

Blood+ did better in sales I imagine, but even then, by the 2nd half of the series, they just wanted to end it by making a single boxset for that 2nd half.

There's also the recent Marvel Anime series they released, but even that became DVD-only and still is.

The movies are like a hit or miss. But what we do know is that, Sony Pictures doesn't really care about Anime. Like sure they make an occassional release, but it's better to let Funimation, Sentai, Viz Media, Discotek, etc. to release it.

Sony released Paprika years ago, and then they licensed the Cowboy Bebop movie to Image. They don't seem interested in releasing catalog titles these days, preferring to hand them off to labels like Image and Twilight Time.

Well their Anime movies they did release on Blu-ray like Paprika, Tekkonkinkreet, The Sky Crawlers, both Final Fantasy films(especially Advent Children), the couple of Resident Evil movies and a couple of others or so were mostly not catalog titles.

Them letting someone like Image to release the Cowboy Bebop Movie was a bad idea from the start. Like a bad idea even before they decided not to include any Extras or Surround Sound. Sure it made it possible to actually have the movies on Blu-ray, but that's all it did. Just like Echo Bridge with their Pokemon movies.

I was surfing channels last night and turns out Cinemax HD was showing it. The transfer looked pretty damn good and the colors were very strong. No edge enhancement or DNR to be found either so I guess that means we should be able to get it on Blu-Ray soon-ish?

It's been on Blu-ray in Japan for a while, and yeah, the transfer is very good. I imported it after I realized that Sony doesn't do catalog anime on Blu-ray. The only ones they did were Final Fantasy movies, clearly because they're CGI.

Do you think we'll ever see someone like Funimation rerelease the Cowboy Bebop movie? Give it a special edition it deserves? There's no way it can be relegated to a Image budget title...

Interesting that Metropolis is being made available in HD in a few outlets. I hope if a BD release happens that it's treated better than a gimped budget release from Image.

Memories on BD would be great too though I doubt we'll ever see it from Sony.

Image/Sony would have to let their rights expire first. Sony licensed it in early 2002 which means they likely renewed their rights sometime around 2007-2009 as license contracts are usually for 5-7 years. They'll at least have it for a few more years unfortunately.

I want a re-release that has the 5.1 audio and extras. Them releasing it stereo only and bare bones sucks and I assume it was a licensor demand because of Image setting the retail price so low to start with.
