You could try the Cub2 from Sib&Co it is small and the bass is phenominal! It is in the $400 range, so would be under your budget. I had one in a 5.1 Sib&Co system. Sib&Co is made by Focal. Here is the link:

You could look at the elemental Designs subs, Hsu, SVS, Outlaw Audio, they all make excellent performing subs and would have several right in your price range.

Depends on what you call compact..........
I'll be ordering this one in about 3 weeks: http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-cyl-pc12_nsd.cfm It's not exactly "small" in total size, but the footprint is kinda small (16"). The size is in the height (35"). SVS is an excellent subwoofer.

lol...I love my eD subs and would recommend them to anybody, but I wouldn't call them compact.

I wouldn't go with def tech for subs. I like their speakers, but the subs they make are not good for the cost.

In that range I'd consider the 12" subs from rythmik, if you like accuracy they are the company to go with.

In addition to the subwoofers mentioned above, these are some additional choices. My favorite is a cylindrical 12.1 or 15.1 from Funky Waves in Canada.

SVS is coming out with the new SB-12NSD. It will be compact and likely excellent sounding. It won't be out for at least a month though, so if you are looking now, then you'll have to wait.

Paradigm Ultracube 10 should fall into that price category. I have the 12 and it is a tiny sub that somehow manages some great depth and accuracy.

Make sure you audition whatever your gonna go with if you can. Tons of options but only YOUR ears can make the decision.

Good advice, but that is hard to do when some of the best bang for the buck subwoofer offerings are not in any B&M stores...

Martin Logan makes good subs. I bought a Dynamo at BB Magnolia and I am happy with it. It puts out a lot of sound using a small compact size. It is front or down firing, which is good if you have pets.

You might want to check out Aperion Audio's subs. I have the 8D (which is pretty tiny) and love it, and they have a thirty day in home try out with free shipping both ways. Both the 8D and the 10D would fit in your budget.

Bigdolf, what do you consider compact? Knowing that would help a lot. If you just need a small footprint but height doesn't matter that much, check out the cylinder subs from SVS. The PC12-NSD is easily within your budget and it only has a 16" circular footprint.

EDIT: I see now that emoxley has already recommended this one above.

Definitely not compact, but if you're making room then no biggie. Awesome sub. Congrats.
