Quick Firmware Question - Blu-ray Forum

I recently decided I wanted to go with a mobile wireless internet from Clear and am dropping Time Warner. Can I still upgrade firmware for a new BR player without a home based internet? Other options?

A lot of manufacturers will send you a CD if you contact them and request it.

I guess the next question would be, how many upgrades are a normal amount over the life of a player?

Each player has different ways to update firmware. All the ones I've used have supported a CD update (download the firmware and burn to a CD-R or ask the manufacturer to mail you a disc). Some also support updating from a USB stick (download the firmware and copy it onto the stick), which can be quite convenient. Each player is different, though - what player are you using?

I've probably updated the firmware on my BD30 at least half a dozen times. Depending on the player and the manufacturer, you may see a few updates during the first six months that it's on the market, then more infrequent updates that are likely to be driven more by a need to fix compatibility issues with new disc releases.

I haven't bought one yet. I am trying to decide between the new Sony 370 or Panasonic 65 or the older Sony 360. I am leaning towards the 360 just because of the price being $50 cheaper than the other two.

Are you confused? Sony does not make the 360.

On that note... no PS3 in consideration?

As mentioned above, most players offer disc based firmware updates. As long as you have ANY internet connection you should be able to d/load the appropriate file(s) and burn them to a disc which can be put into the player for updating.

Really? Are you certain? I don't know. It's kind of a grey area. I disagree. I believe that the OP was... in fact... talking about... the Sony BDP-S360.

PS3 is way more than I want to spend for a BR player. I don't watch a ton of movies, but I want them to be BR when I do. I don't play any games either. Yes, I was talking about the Sony BDP-S360.
