Default Rx-v863 hookup

How does one decide to hook up a hd dvd and the tv to the av receiver. is there a way to compare which does a better job of PQ. I'm thinking that the HD-dvd player and A/V goes to the TV., but if the A/V does a better job, then it would be....HD-dvd to receiver then to TV. all connect with hdmi.thanks

normally to get the hd audio from the disc, youll have to go player to receiver via hdmi, then receiver to tv via hdmi. you should be able to pass the video through the receiver without the receiver doing any processing or with processing depending on your requirements.for proper settings check the manual. you can usually download it from yamaha's site if you dont have it.

Welcome to the forum.

In a nutshell, you should connect all HDMI devices (blu-ray player, HD-DVD player, gaming console, HTPC, etc.) to your AV receiver with HDMI cables, and then run a single HDMI cable from your receiver to your HDTV. For any devices that do not have HDMI connections component video is your next best option, and then you would also want to use optical toslink or digital coaxial for audio.

ah i see, that is the 'passthru' i was reading but did not connect what exactly it meant. another connect question. i don't have a hd cable box, but i do receive hd on the locals channel's, about 6 or 7 of them. Currently the cable is connected to the tv, if i connect to the a/v is anything lost or do i just keep the connection as is. thanks

Do you have a cable box at all, or does the cable come run from the wall directly to your TV?

I do have a cable box but don't use it at all. if i use it, i lose the HD local channels, in addition to that when changing channels it take a fraction of sec to get in sync, so my connection is from the wall to the tv, which gets me some hd tv and when changing channels no momentery out of sync.

In that case I think you're going to have to keep running it straight to your TV. I don't know of any receiver that has an F connection on it for regular cable. To run the cable through the receiver you would have to use the cable box.

It would be wall outlet-->cable box-->AV receiver-->TV.

ok the setup is a bit difficult for me. i only have two things going to the v863 unit, a phono and hd player. The hda35 is using the dvd in1 and i have the hdmi out from the 863 going to the av in on the tv. no sound from tv using the unit (only the tv speakers) i have to really crank it up to hear the phono, then when i listen to the radio i have to turn it down. so i'm all over with this. no sound, extreamly low sound, and to high. i thought HDMI was going forward, so what am i missing? thanks

various sources will have various levels of sound. the the ps3 and blu ray movies, i can have my receiver anywhere from -30 to -20 but with the xbox 360 (dd and dts only) its -45 to -35. audio from the turntable is also at a different level. the way i get around it is be setting the audio level when i turn on the amp to very low so i can adjust it accordingly

does your receiver have an internal amp for the phono?

Your connections are pretty close, so no worries. Since you're using broadcast TV to pick up HD channels without a cable box, the only way to get sound through your system is if your TV has an audio out jack, and that is usually on the rear. If it does, you would connect the audio out from the TV to an appropriate audio input on the 863 receiver. This will allow you to hear TV broadcasts using the receiver and your speakers.

As for the phono, lower sound might be normal. What setting do you need the receiver on in order to achieve a comfortable sound level? The 863 contains a built-in phono stage, and I'm not sure if it is adjustable at all. Did you connect the turn table as shown in the manual? If so, you may have done everything correctly.

The RX-V 863 is a great receiver. However, in order to get the most out of it be sure to read the sections of the manual thoroughly that pertain to you.

Good luck!

Yes! i got the sound, just as you posted. I was under the impression that the HDMI took care of all sound and video. So i just plugged into the 'prog out' on the plasma and to 'dtv/cbl' of the 863.....sound. phono is connected correctly.
my concern about the sound coming from this unit, is that you have to turn the knob quite abit to get to lets say....-45, whereas the unit it replaced(stereo) the knob was just turned slightly to get to -45. so i have to get use to that....much thanks for replys, you guys

The amount you turn the knob is normal on the 863. I have the previous model, the HTR-6080 (RX-V 861), and I have the same issue.

Have fun with it!
