Xbox 360 & Wii fanboys will say this is only because of Sony's 10-year life cycle; basically the PS3 will stick around till the PS5 launches, while the Wii is replaced in a few years when Nintendo finally embraces HD. But I agree that the PS3's best days are yet to come, especially if it gets full-blown BD 3D with just a firmware upgrade.

Although we won’t see another console generation for a while, a lot of pundits in the industry predict that the next consoles (call them the PlayStation 4, Xbox 720, whatever) will completely lack any sort of physical media and instead will rely entirely on downloadable games.
This is the only thing I disagree with. Physical media will be around for a lot longer than the current generation of consoles. Apart from that, it does make sense that Sony's life cycle for there consoles will mean the PS3 will sell the most.

I agree. I'm not even sure the PS5 will completely lack a physical medium. People still want to actually own their merchandise. Just look at the problems a lot of people have with iTunes when their systems crash.

My generation, and all those before me, aren't too willing to give up EVERY bit of physical media. I don't see full DL until maybe PS6. lol.

Especially since something like 40% of americans don't have the internet... (or something crazy high like that.)

BUT I agree with the rest. VIVA PS3!

Good find. Interesting read.

However, I see the PS5...when it comes out in 50 years, being a box the size of a port-a-potty and your completely surrounded by the game. Optional chair for racing games.

yeah, as far as media goes, i like to actually have something i can hold that is representative of the money i spent on it, not just a file somewhere that i can just to watch or play or listen to, i dont think DL only will be in any kind of media for AT LEAST 10 years, they have to come up with a faster delivery system, and media storage has to get a lot cheaper too, the better the game and movie tech gets, the bigger the file sizes, and if we are storing games that are 25-30 GB now, think of how big they will be in a few years, my 320 GB hard drive would only hold a handful of games, there is a long way to go before its really a viable solution to go DL only

I think it's important to bear in mind that the companies that predict a digital future tend to be the ones whose business benefits the most

It's the public that will determine how the future unfolds, not the corporations. When they bring out stuff we like, we buy it, when they don't, it fails.

Until the majority of the world has fast reliable net connections a digital download future is simply not going to happen. MP3 players have been around for nearly 10 years, but CD's are still made and sell happily.

I just can't bring myself to trust one device to look after all my digital media;it's just too risky and aside from that I like to have a library of books, games, cd's and movies that says something about me and my taste; I don't want it all hidden away on a hard drive!

Sigh, another one of these useless "Analyst Predicts" articles (not this thread). All they do is get fanboys of one console worked up and fanboys of another console revved up). Real gamers don't care about this nonsense.

Yep, logetivity was one of the reasons why a PS looked so appealing to me. I'm glad I bought the PS3.

The real sad thing of this generation is that the 360 has lowered consumers expectations of what the almight dollar will get you. Not just in terms of features but in terms of what one expects out of consoles life. Sure consoles are more complicated before but time and time again I see 360 gamers being okay with the fact that they have to shell out $ again and again and again to replace their "worn" system.

Disturbing to see people with such low standards in terms of hardware quality expectations..

The same can be said for ps3 owners whose console yellow lights or blu-ray drive fails and goes out and buy another.

Yea because the PS1 & 2 didn't do that already.
