Default Onkyo TX-SR705S 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver & Speakers I don't feel the "umph"

I have all three of these and I don't know WHAT i'm doing wrong I have the wires in correctly maybe placement is wrong? I use Audessy I just can't figure out why I don't have the best sounding sound...my friends have cheaper systems and their sounds sound great...HELP guys.

Also if anyone is in NJ I'd happily pay someone to help me

It's probably because you got the silver unit...they don't have as much "umph" as the black units.

I'm kidding of course, you say you have it plugged in correctly but don't provide details on how it's plugged in. There are multiple ways to connect it that are equally correct. What cables are you using to connect the ps3 to the receiver? Also, what are the audio output settings on the ps3

If it's a ps3 slim, set it to "Bitstream" for the audio. If it's an older ps3, set it to output LPCM. I'm not familiar with the ps3s to know what the wording is for them.

In the receiver's settings, if the HDMI out is set to "ON", turn it "OFF". That's to send sound to the tv over HDMI, and will interfer with the sound from the system. I guess you've double checked all your receiver settings for HDMI, for audio? You assigned the HDMI input you used, to the ps3? Getting obvious questions asked first.........
Good luck!

You need to do manual adjustments. Go in the menu of the receiver and do the following:
  1. Make sure all the speakers and subwoofer are set to ON.
  2. Set all speakers (front, center, and surrounds) to SMALL. Onkyo receivers may not have the SMALL and LARGE option. Just set their High Pass Filter (HPF) of the speakers to somewhere between 80Hz to 100Hz, depending on the low frequency extension of your speakers.
  3. Set the Low Pass Filter (LPF) of LFE to 120Hz.
  4. On the back of the subwoofer, turn its level to around 60%.
  5. On the back of the subwoofer, turn the crossover dial all the way up to its maximum point.
  6. Connect the subwoofer to the LFE (Sub) output on the back of the receiver with a sub cable.
  7. The most important factor in affecting the performance of a subwoofer in a small HT room is placement. Put the subwoofer up front in a corner about a foot or so away from the walls. Put the subwoofer on a riser, if you can.
  8. Run the test tones inside the receiver and check the levels of the speakers and the subwoofer with your ears or an SPL meter. Make sure they are approximately the same.
  9. Human ears are not very reliable. An SPL meter is a lot more effective. You can buy or borrow the $50 Rdio Shack digital SPL meter.
