I normally do not subscribe to the hipness of using “OMG” but found the obnoxious acronym making numerous appearances in my mind while watching KLOVN, or CLOWN: THE MOVIE in English. Based on a popular Danish television series by the same creative force, the film fine tunes its awkwardly direct and unbelievable content to fit perfectly within a feature film.... CLOWN pulls few punches and shies from even fewer taboos, but approaches the material with a distinctly European style. The film is a hilarious riot, but garners its laughs with subtle, brilliant tastelessness. Structurally, the film resembles THE HANGOVER, but with an ironically higher level of maturity. In many ways, CLOWN combines the vulgarity of this style of comedy with the awkwardness of THE OFFICE and the intelligence of Louis CK’s TV series LOUIE.... Fair warning goes out to those easily offended, as CLOWN raises the shock bar higher than we’ve seen in American cinema, yet does so with a much more candid, more easily digestible formula to swallow.
... Clown is one of the funniest deadpan comedies I've seen in a long time. The key is that the film is played absolutely straight, and it never stretches the bounds of credulity beyond their breaking point. This slice of life comedy is crude, inappropriate, disgusting, and ridiculously funny.... Clown is in unrepentantly poor taste and hysterical. Casper (Casper Christensen) and Frank (Frank Hvam) have honed these characters to a fine comic point. Every action in Clown has a stupidly funny and rational reaction. The team involved leaves no sacred cows untipped in the pursuit of laughs, and no penis unbared. Consider yourself admonished. Don't miss Clown.
... Fortunately, you don’t need to know anything about the series to enjoy “Clown;” all that’s required is a love of “Curb Your Enthusiasm”-style observational-slash-confrontational awkwardness and Farrelly Brothers-style gross-out sex humor. Smash those two together and drown them in Underberg bitters and you’ve got “Clown.”... This sort of outrageous shock comedy works best as a surprise. I can tell you that the film has a sex scene so funny it made me cry, and a riff on the final punchline in “The Hangover” so outrageous it made me scream (and might also be illegal to show in the United States)....
Don’t quote me on this, but I think Clown could be the funniest, most heart-warming comedy featuring underage nudity. I haven’t researched this statement, so there may be a funnier, more heart-warming comedy featuring a kid’s wiener out there.... Clown is bizarre mixture of good intentions, bad intentions, lust, love, raunchiness, sweetness and graphic, graphic nudity....
...Though the sequences predictably lead to further trouble, especially for Frank, their details nevertheless surprise, while each setpiece tops the previous one for sheer outrageousness....
...Though derived from a popular Danish TV series, Clown: The Movie is really a collusion between three recent strains of popular comedy: first and foremost, the “comedy of embarrassment,” whose popularity can be traced back to the twin influences of the UK Office and Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm; second, the Apatow brand of “manchild” comedies, in which men in their 30s (or older) behave like teenagers until they’re forced to mature; and third, the debauched bro humor of The Hangover (from which it borrows a final-scene photo reel of horror)....
... Clown does an impressive job at feeling like a sweet film instead of just a raunchy cringe-inducing awkward comedy that it could have been. Of course, it gets to its conclusion in the worst ways possible, to our benefit.
I am not exaggerating when I say this is the most hilarious comedy in a while.
Clown: The Movie will be in theaters and VOD July 27.
