Default Layoffs

So just a small rant. Why cities decide it is a good idea to lay off public safety forces or threaten lay offs as a scare tactic. Sorry I work in law enforcement so have a much biased view but just doesn't make sense is all.

http://toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll...NEWS16/3180368

I work in a much smaller town and more then likely within the next 2 weeks we will be laying off 3-4. BS is all.

It sucks, I've been trying like hell to get a job for months, man. I couldn't get jack when I was living in Hawaii and nothing here in Ohio. So, pretty much I pulled what cash I had left in my bank account to make my movie. It was pretty much do or die trying for me with Trauma.

What did you do with TRAUMA?

City has come at us to for furlough days. We tried to negotiate with the city. We are currently on a 90/10 health insurance, was talk about getting full sick time pay out, City said would only compromise on sick time payout if gave us raise and insurance, we said NO. Here comes contract negotiations.

We're still doing some last minute touches. We got a screening at an art gallery on April 2nd. And I am entering it in some film festivals and looking to possibly find theaters interested in screening the film. And of course, looking for a studio to distribute the film on DVD and Blu-ray.

I'm in the fire service and I completely understand where you're coming from. Fortunately where I work hasn't gotten to that point yet. My city management is (fortunately) pro-emergency services and they say they'll cut other departments before the fire or police departments. I hope they don't have to cut anyone because I don't want to see anyone at all lose their job, but all these places laying off cops or shutting down fire stations just baffles me.

Mansfield, but we're screening in either Delaware or Columbus. I need to call my executive producer and get the location. I'll probably have all the details after I meet up and test screen my cut of the film on the 26th.

Mortgage 'crisis' causes economic meltdown ---> Businesses panic and begin laying-off employees ---> J6P gets real nervous of future and stops buying ---> Lack of sales cause more companies to lay-off workers ---> The cycle becomes self-perpetuating.

Many places (like yours) are in serious crisis-mode, yet what are they looking at cutting? To me, emergency services are the LAST places you should be cutting. Shut down the library. Give me the budget and I can assure you I'll find plenty of waste to get rid of before emergency services.

Good luck to you. Things do not appear to be getting any better, and probably won't for another year or two (if then).

Without people working, tax revenue starts to dry-up, but governments (Fed/State/Local) continue to spend as if there are no problems. Finally, a year-and-a-half later we have governments scrambling to figure out how to balance the books. It just amazes me how stupid the government leaders are at all levels. Many places (like yours) are in serious crisis-mode, yet what are they looking at cutting? To me, emergency services are the LAST places you should be cutting. Shut down the library, cut back on all of the government overhead and live with potholes for awhile. Give me the budget and I can assure you I'll find plenty of waste to get rid of before emergency services.

Thanks, I wont be cut. I have enough seniority I'm good. But your exactly right. It is amazing how our chief says we are our own worst enemy, learning to do more with less, but yet we keep cutting stuff. Yeah kinda wishing I wouldve gone and gotten my MBA or at least a business degree so I can figure this stuff out.

I have a sibling in Bellevue...... I'm in Lakewood though (which is Cleveland pretty much) Ohio isn't doing so hot, so they come up with all sorts of 'creative' solutions........

I don't understand, you don't want layoffs but your group seems unwilling to have concessions to help save money and therefore jobs. I don't wish layoffs on anyone but the bottom line is there is less money to go around and something needs to give.

No currently a long time ago, the city made a certain time period, after this time period you will only get a quarter of your sick time payout, with the most being paid out at 240 hrs. Otherwise before this cut your payout was 960 hours. Well in the last 10 years, only one officer has had a 960 payout. The city wants us to go to an 80/20 health plan, we asked for the city time payout and the city said they would only do it if "we" gave up our raise along with going to this insurance. We said no. Our own union lawyer said, why give up a raise if going to worse health insurance, raise makes up for the difference for what your going to have to pay.

But our city council in a round about way gave themselves raises. They instituted a policy with the more committees you sit on, you receive a boost in pay. Well considering a good majority of the same council members are all on the same committees, was just a raise.

So just so I sent the example of our city. We are referred to as little Toledo or Little Detroit. The city is not replacing our guns (roughly 7 yr life span) this year because they do not have the money. We do not have radar in our cars nor MTDs nor even own a single laser. We also do not carry tasers. Most of our cars do not have shotguns, with most of our shotguns being from the 1970s, ha. We are already at the bare bottom of PDs in our area.

Most recently the LA County Sheriff has ordered most of his command staff to start working overtime. Glad to see somebody is stepping up.

Sorry for the rant.

I think I did a pretty good job of that!

My explanation was about the economics of the problems. The reference to 'government' was used in a similar manner as if I were saying Chrysler, GM or the banking industry. It's an organization that is doing a very poor job of managing their finances (no one 'side' versus another was specified, as it is a general problem related to all). Trust me, I'm trying to be very careful that I don't start any political battles around here. I didn't go into why this mess started, did I?

Yeah, we live on the street that dead-ends into Lakewood Park.... very close to the park actually. We love the old homes in the area.... the inlaws live on Lake Ave. (we did, until we moved, over by edgewater park) It's a pretty nice place for stuff to do, and with the "small town" feel.

Yeah, but the discussion of the 'root causes' is pretty deeply political in nature...

For what it's worth, I agreed with everything you said

Oh, I totally agree. Discussing the root causes could get ugly, which is why I simply went right to the results, which I think everyone pretty much agrees on.

Your comment in the thread yesterday made me realize that I need to tone it down around here, and I am. It won't be easy at times, but it should reduce my stress level some.

Brother actually lives south of the High School on Ferndale, mom and dad live on one of the sections of Northland.

Yeah what the have done with that park is pretty amazing. Have an interest in working back home but just never put forth that much effort. From living in Lakewood to somewhat traveling, I love the fact, Lakewood has streets and is just not endless subdivisions.

As long we are nice to each other, spirited debate is always worth it.

And well when we do lay off, at least I can rape the city for some overtime, because that 58 inch Vizio looks amazing.
