Default Comcast Masters Tournament 3D Broadcast

Just thought I would post this for anyone interested in 3D!

"Augusta National Golf Club and Comcast have announced a partnership to deliver the Masters Tournament in 3D to U.S. homes. Consumers with new 3D TVs and 3D-enabled PCs will be able to watch the Masters live in 3D from April 7-11."

"Only those early adopters who have 3D TVs or special PC gadgets will actually be able to watch the 3D coverage. To watch on a PC, viewers will need a 3D media player, 3D monitor and 3D glasses."

It's interesting that:

Quote:
"The set-top doesn't know 3D," said Francisco. "It's broadcast in panelized side by side format. To the set-top it's just another HD stream."
So Comcast will seemingly be able to support 3D broadcast with their existing deployed set top boxes.

Are there existing 3DTVs (besides the ones just being rolled out) compatible with what they are doing?

This is the really interesting part: if the set top box can send the signal, in 1080i, ANY television should be able to display it. You would still need glasses - but the rate of delivery of the signal is no higher than any other signal from a set top box. Most HDMI signals on older boxes are in HDMI 1.1 or 1.2, not the higher rates for 1.3 or 1.4.

I am beginning to believe that 1080i 3-D is absolutely possible, precluding the need for a new television (or even a new player, if the older players can be upgraded via firmware to the new codec.) You will need the shutter glasses, and a way to synchronize them.

This would make for a much more rapid adoption of 3-D, if that's what the manufacturers want. You could see it at lower resolution, and upgrade later on.
