Default MPEG-4 AVC versus VC-1 ?

Do any of you have a preference between the two technologies and can tell which one produces a better picture? And what are the differences between the two technologies?

From reading many reviews of the movies on this site, the ones that get the best reviews for picture quality are on MPEG-4.

Top rated movies for PQ:
MPEG-4:

No Country For Old Men
Master And Commander
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
The Incredible Hulk
Transformers 1 & 2
