Default Custom A6-6T6 MTM Center Channel Stand...

Well, I decided to get a center channel to match my mains. The A6-6T6 MTM was my choics (thanks progers). Soooooooo, its time to get going on a custom center channel stand that will put the speaker just above my computer monitor/desk.

Budget: $50.00 ( already went over budget on supplies at Home Depot, $62.00. However, I may be able to return some things, like extra spray paint, if it doesn't get used).

Specs:

*3/4 inch plywood, 4' x 8' piece cut to specific lengths.
*(2) 2 x 2 pine cut to length.
*Top plate: 22.5" x 9"
*Base plate: 26.5" x 13".
*Facade piece: alder wood (stained with redwood and lacquered).
*Paint, screws, rubber feet, wood glue, sand paper, etc...

The guy at Home Depot did the 10 cuts for FREE!!!! Saved me $5.00!

The stands will be about 51 1/2" high. Yes, thats fifty-one and one half inches high.

Speaker will be angled slightly downward toward listening position. Method of angling the speaker is still TBD. The top plate must remain flat. So, something that sits on the top plate will have to be constructed.

Instead of one large column (like my speakers stands) there will be 3 columns supporting the A6-6T6 MTM. One large and hollow (filled with sand), and two that are a bit smaller and solid (hence the 2 x 2 pine above). Each column will have an instep of 1/2 inch for support and aesthetics.

The facade piece will be attached to the center column (like the speaker stands).

Hope you guys like it.

Looks like you're putting a lot of time and effort into it. It's progressing very well!

Wow dude, that thing is taller than I expected. What are you planning? Are you going to put that behind your monitor with the speaker on top?

Yep. Behind my monitor with the speaker on top + angled down a bit. This trucker is going to be pretty heavy once its filled with sand . I'm going to guess about 40pds. Its 52" tall right now. Still have to angle the top and add some isolation pads up there as well.

SAND??? Why are you filling it with sand? You'll need a crane to move it! Honestly, I think that is overkill.

It will become a true "pillar" of sound!

Does it need to be filled with anything? If the base is sturdy as is, I don't know what you'd gain by adding sand. If the base isn't sturdy, well then maybe you'd gain some added support with sand. Are you just talking about filling the base, or all the way up the shaft of the stand as well? Maybe I thought you meant something other than you did.

No no, I think you were on the right track....the whole thing was going to be filled with sand. The base is sturdy. The only thing I'm worried about is resonation from the void in the shaft. Should I not be concerned with this? Hell, if I don't need to fill eer' up, that would be nice.

If that is what you're concerned about (sound resonating in the shaft), I would suggest loose polyfill rather than sand. If you put sand in anything, maybe just the base to add weight.

Edit: dude, you're really good with building things! That's turning out great!

I already have the sand, so I may just fill it and see how much it weighs. If its to much, I'll dump it out and throw some poly-fill in there.

Thanks for the praise progers, it really does mean alot!

I may have you build one for me! Down the road I want to remove my TV stand and put it all in the back of the room. When I do that, I'll need a stand for my beast of a center. And you've got good wood working skills!

high-end stand monitor speakers almost always recommend filled stands to allow the speaker to make the sound and not the stand. when i get around to building stands they will all be filled, i am even considering using cement as a filler to make the stand as inert as possible

Not planning on moving them are you? If / when you sell the house, they'll go with it, right?
