Default Decided to stay with LED now ...

UN55C6500 is $2800 right now at Best Buy, I've looked but can't tell if it is edge lit or back lit. Anyone have a good guess ? I apologize for so many questions but when it comes to dropping 3k on a TV I want to be as informed and ready to purchase as I can. I trust a forum like this much more than I do the "experts" at Best Buy who are more interested in adding on the Monster Cables than a customer actually getting the TV they want.

I didn't see it mentioned on the samsung site:

http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/t...l&tab=features

But these sites says it's edge-lit.

The Samsung UN55C6500 LED TV is the 55” model in the entry level 2010 LED UNC6500 series and is aimed at shoppers looking for the tremendous picture performance and quality of an edge-lit LED LCD but without the need for all the fancy features that drive prices upwards.
http://www.hometheaterstore.com/Sams.../un55c6500.htm

Most of the sites selling it mention that as well.

And we haven't even mentioned that this is an LED LCD HDTV. Using edge-lit LED backlighting, the UN55C6500 is not only able to deliver enhanced color purity and staggering black levels (the hallmarks of lifelike detail), but it is also able to achieve an incredibly thin panel — only 1.1" thick! Finally, Ultra Clear Panel technology and a Wide Color Enhancer team up to bring crisp details, natural skin tones, excellent shadow detail, and vibrant colors to your home HD viewing experience. Oh, and at 55" in size, you get nothing less than a viewing experience of cinematic proportions.

The C6500 has the new Samsung Pinpoint Dimming technology which is also included with the C8000.

This is not the same as local dimming which is available on the B8500 and the A950.

Don't ask how good pinpoint dimming is as nobody knows yet.....

I work in the audio/video industry and from what our Samsung rep tells us is that the "pinpoint dimming" is basically the same as local dimming in the B8500, just a step up. How it looks/works, we won't know till we see the demo model come into the store at end of month.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I was able to find one on Display at a local Best Buy and I was very impressed. Now it looks like I need to find one in stock or wait until next weekend when they claim to be getting more. For some reason the one thing thats glaring at me is the "entry level" comment from one of the reviews. I looked thru Samsung's website and trying to determine which of the new models is entry mid or flagship models.

All of Samsung's new models are going to be edge lit, reps at CES told me that after massive amounts of money spent on improving that technology they dont see why they need to make more backlit models...and their tests showed that there is no noticable difference in performance between their new gen edge lit vs the previous backlit.
in two words-its cheaper for them to make, allows the TVs to be thinner which people seem to like, and the average Joe wont be able to see any difference between an 8500 model and a new edge lit.

Although I get they're reasoning from a corporate standpoint, that's rather sucky news. Especially if it encourages other manufacturers to follow suit.

Speaking of other manufacturers, any word as to wether that new 72" Vizio will be back-lit or edge-lit?

The PRO series Vizio's which includes the 72" will be backlit with local dimming.

Samsung is just trying to save money and make extra profit on the edge-lit bandwagon.

In my view there is no way that an edge-lit set is going to outperform a fully LED backlit set with local dimming.

in a bright room, watching stuff thats mostly DVR'd (I work 24 hour shifts so I miss quite a bit) and movies at night with the family, am I going to notice a huge difference between edge lit and back lit.. Mind you I am coming from a 46" 60 hz LCD thats about 2 years old. So I'm thinking I will see a huge improvement either way , no ?

I love my UN55B6000 set. Yeah, it doesn't have local dimming and the light seeps through in the corners during very dark scenes, but I'm not hung up on it. Maybe I've gotten used to it. It's better than the 51" Sony rear projection set I had w/ the DVI outlet.

Does anyone have, or know where I can find, a picture of just what the light "bleed in" on the edge lit LED TV's. Not having seen it, it sounds horrible and almost like a waste of money

Look at the corners in the following picture and notice the 'clouding'.

Here's another example better showing what I think you are asking about:

Exactly the reason I went with a local dimming set as the light leakage drives me crazy.

Wow.. that seems like something that would bug the Hell out of me when trying to watch a movie. Thanks for the pictures. Now it has me second guessing myself (actually at this point, its more like eleventh guessing myself)
