Default What is the deal with Polk Speakers

I have read so many forms and seen so many HT with Polk speakers. I am wandering why people think these are the greatest speakers of all time. They are nice speakers don't get me wrong but if i was looking at purchasing new ones they would be the last speaker on my list. For the money Polk are overprice for what you get and there are better speakers out there for the same price. I think the major problem with a lot of the forms on this site is people push these speakers onto newbies that don't know better and are looking for a quick answer and to fit in with the crowd.

Just my thoughts

Hi Twitch--

What would you recommend? I am in the market for new speakers and you are the first person to have an issue with Polk. I am not coming at you or anything, I just want to know what you think are good. I was also looking at Klipsch. Thanks!

Joe

you are crazy if you think polk are overpriced, they are with out a doubt the best speaker for the money. I got my lsi speakers for much less than anything that can compete in performance. I tested the likes of martin logan, b&w focal and the polks sounded as it,and sometimes better for much less

Twitch, POLK isn't overpriced at all.You get a good quality speaker for the money that you want to spend.
To me Polk is a brand name without the brand price...

Polk is not even in the same class as Martin Logan and B&W, and if you can't notice the difference in the sound between them, then you made the right choice and bought polk, anyone who can't tell the difference between those speaker brands must have hearing problems.

you must have never listed to the lsi series, no doubt martin logan and b&w make speakers that are better than anything polk makes, but the lines closest in price to the lsi such as the b&w 600 series which is still much more expensive than the lsi are in no way better

I'm not saying they are overprice, just overprice for what your getting. For the same money spent on Polk you can get a much higher end speaker. The main reason Polk sells as much as they do is because they sell in big box stores, and the reason for there pricing is all the overhead and markup these stores charge. High end stores have less overhead and markup on most of their products so for the same price as the Polks in the BB stores you can get a better speaker at your local high end retailer, plus better knowledge of what they are selling you for your room.

I agree. Their retail prices are a bit pricey but... who pays retail? I sure as hell don't.

how are you not saying they are overpriced, isnt that what being overpriced for what your getting is. name one high end speaker that you can get for the price of a comprable polk speaker

I agree with you twitch. I think polk are overpriced for what you get too. They are a mass assembly line speaker company. They care about putting out decent sound and getting money, not putting out great sound.

A lot of people rlatively new to home theater, and I'm now excluding myself, find safety in numbers. People come to this site and see so many people bragging about the Holy Trinity of Blu-ray.com -- PS3, Onkyo receivers, and Polk speakers -- they many follow the herd. (BTW, I have a PS3 and Onkyo receiver, too). And these aren't bad choices.

Plus, Polk is widely available on Amazon, just about the most trustworthy and economical way to buy speakers on the net, unless you buy from an internet only speaker manufacturer. And unlike the net only speakers, you can find Polks in showrooms, listen to them, then order them cheaper on the net.

So, it is wasy to understand why so many people on an internet message board - not just this one - talk each other into buying Polks. And, again, they are good for the money.

I lucked into a nice trio of used of Monitor Audio fronts at a great price but I recall considering Polks as sounding good for the price.
