Default What about Blu-Ray for PCs?

Seems like there would be a nice market for people that would like it in place of DVD-R. I mean, try backipng up a 80gb to 4.7gb DVD-Rs. Data storage seems like a place it could generate money in today, even before HDTV takes off. I wonder why there aren't any products announced for PCs.

indeed, im really waiting on something like a blu-ray autoloader backup unit for servers and the like, i'd be nice to be able to dump 500gb to 14 disks over night rather than dumping 500gb over 2 days via LTO.

it sould seem like a perfect market place, has anyone seen any info relating to the use of blu-ray in such a market? (and hope it doesnt use backup-exec  )

I am definitely interested in a PC drive - though I would want the promised 50GB capacity, and maybe the 2x transfer rate...

Cheers!

Default Blue ray and piracy

the only problem with blue ray for pcs is the amount of piracy it will undoubtly create, with the ablity to get 5 or 6 divx quaility films or thousands of mp3 files on a single 4.7 gig dvd , then this medium is sure to be a favorite for P2P users and Hardcore pirates as well as many legal users.

Blu-ray gains support from HP and Dell

The support from HP and Dell, the largest PC manufacturers, is an important step in providing the industry and consumers with one format that covers both PC as well as CE applications.

"HP believes Blu-ray Disc is the most consumer-friendly technology choice for the next generation of removable storage," said John Romano, Senior Vice President, Consumer PC Organization, Hewlett-Packard Company. "With ever- expanding uses for digital discs in the market, HP believes Blu-ray Disc will allow for the seamless interchange between consumer electronics and personal computers, thus protecting an individuals' technology investment as well as expanding their digital capabilities. HP is committed to making technology easier to use and supports the proliferation of Blu-ray Disc. HP is looking forward to joining the Blu-ray Disc Founders in the very near future."

"Dell is committed to driving industry standards that meet the needs of our customers," said Gerry Smith, Vice President, Peripheral Development and Procurement, Dell Inc. "The significant storage capacity the Blu-ray Disc format provides combined with broad industry support from both CE and PC manufacturers and large entertainment companies make it an obvious choice for next generation optical storage."

Default Why are we waiting?

If Blu-Ray is so hot, why can't I find a blu-ray writer for my pc? Is blu-ray all 'hype' or what?

Because it's a next-generation technology. Just as for DVD, it takes many years for new technologies to mature and become ready for widespread consumer use. Don't expect to see a lot of Blu-ray Disc drives/players/recorders until 2005. The images in our galleries are just prototypes from tradeshows.

Default PC drive from Samsung

Samsung was showing a conceptual PC drive at CES.

They showe a PC with a mock up of a BD drive (and a bad one at that - just a piece of printed cardboard over the drive slot) and they had the working BD drive in a plastic case so that you could see it running.

I didn't think too much about that until I talked to the guy - he said that they drive was essentially a modified transport from the video player.

When I looked a little closer, I noticed that the drive was really quite long, and was possibly also too wide and tall to fit in a standard slot. So, just maybe, BD transports are actually too big to fit in a standard slot right now, and some effort will need to go into making them small enough to fit as an internal drive.

I always wondered why the prototypes were all so big!

Cheers!
DAve.

Yes. We should also get rid of guns, cars, phones, computers, knives, DVD's, VHS tapes! if we get rid of all of our technology, crime will be reduced. My point is - as long as there is something of use to people, someone will find a way to use it for a crime. Companies and recording artists are always finding ways to protect their stuff - im sure they will be fine

Mmmm, if they are going to develop Internal PC drives, could it be possible by updating the firmware, to be capable of writing multi-layer?
It is possible for DVD, but also for Blu-ray Disc?

But what if I want to store, say, my homework and essays on bluray...

I'm not being completely sarcastic about it, one could definitely use a bluray rewriteable for documents, I'm sure I will.

wat i am really interested in is when there will be PC drives that record bluray in Australia. TDK Australia haven't even got their bluray disc under their product list on their Aussie website.

i am also interested to see whether anyone knows of a drive for PC that will burn the 9.1GB DVD-RAM. At 240minutes it would be quite handy to burn large programs/TV shows onto.

I hope that bluray does emerge in Australia soon as the possibilites would then be endless  8)

Default Herbe, Drives Again ...

As you probably know already, the 23GB professional disc for data [PDD- discussed elsewhere in blu-ray.com] was launched last year, and a number of manufacturers (including Sony) have developed TB storage products based upon it, but Sony are also currently developing a universal 50GB BD/HD-DVD/DVD/CD compatible computer drive, so when that's launched the market could be pretty big - but it's planned for early to mid 2005.

Dual-layer 8.54GB DVD recorders for PCs exist, but at the moment management of the two layers appears a little cumbersome - to ensure specified reading performance, you have to ensure that similar amounts of data are written to both layers - if not, "dummy data" has to be written to make up the difference! Sounds like a cross between a firmware issue where a PC could treat a dual-layer DVD as a single 8.54GB drive and a DVD issue where each layer is treated separately. Of course, if twin heads were adopted for DVD drives this compatibility-related problem could be resolved, but it's probably a little late in the day for doing this with DVD...

I'm a resident of Australia and at current i don't have a DVD burner in my PC. Should i get a DVD burner now or would it be better to wait until Blue ray burners come out? How long will it take? How much are the Disks going to hold? how fast are they going to burn aprox? and are they planning to go dual layer?

Well,
Yes you should buy one...
It will gonna take a while before Blu-ray Discs for PC will come out (2006)
Discs: 25 GB, 50 GB, 100 GB and perhaps 200 GB too
The speed will go up to 8x and perhaps higher...
They'll be single / double / quad / 8-layered....

Just look at the Blu-ray FAQ

Pc's really need to be looked at for this technology. For video editing and gaming.

With the introuduction of PCI express, blue ray and the 64 bit cpu, pc gamers will be able to stay caught up with the console's as they push the limits of gaming to the extreme.

mot to mention it would be nice to be able to "back-up" my dvd's to fewer disc's
