Default New Receiver

Looking for a new receiver for a friend with a max budget of $300. What would you guy's recommend in this price range? Something with a good amp section. I know it's alot to ask on a small budget.

Amazon has the Sony DN1000 for $329, my 920 is great

Or the Yamaha 665 is $328, but the Sony bench tested about 20 wpc better with 5 and 7 channels driven. The Yamaha was 42 wpc and the sony was 60.

Or you can talk him into getting a refurb Marantz off of accessories4less. I think the 4003 goes for $299 or $350

I just got a Pioneer 920 for $312 from Amazon. Haven't use it all that much but it seems like it's pretty good for the price.

I have recommended this one to my brother and a friend who had around that same budget. They have both been very happy with it. It's a great receiver for that price! You can also get it as low as $299 on newegg when they run specials.

depending on what his knowledge is in regards to a home theater build, id consider the sony STR-DN1000 to be a great starting point.

If he was inclined to further his needs, and add on more flexibility, the best choice would either be the Marantz as callas has mentioned, or go with a Denon 590.

Thumbs up Receiver

The Onkyo TX-SR308 is less than $300. It has 4 HDMI repeater jacks, decodes all of the new lossless codecs found on Blu-rays and has good power. I don't think you can find more bang for the buck in any other receiver on the market.
