I have recommended this one to my brother and a friend who had around that same budget. They have both been very happy with it. It's a great receiver for that price! You can also get it as low as $299 on newegg when they run specials. ![]() |

depending on what his knowledge is in regards to a home theater build, id consider the sony STR-DN1000 to be a great starting point.
If he was inclined to further his needs, and add on more flexibility, the best choice would either be the Marantz as callas has mentioned, or go with a Denon 590. |

The Onkyo TX-SR308 is less than $300. It has 4 HDMI repeater jacks, decodes all of the new lossless codecs found on Blu-rays and has good power. I don't think you can find more bang for the buck in any other receiver on the market.
