Hey guys!
I recently bought Avatar the same as everyone else. I was looking forward to seeing it after watching 15 minutes at my local big box store on a Panasonic G20. It looked just stunning with so much detail. Long story short I popped in Avatar with my wife anticipating greatness on my KRP-500m. It looked ok. I didn't get that awe factor that I had in the store. I thought, why do people praise Kuro so much when the Panny seems much better? I decided to look into it more after my wife went to bed. About 2 hours later(now 1am) I found that I had set my PS3 to RGB Limited and set my Kuro to RGB limited as well. According to D-Nice this is what I should have set. I decided to change some of the settings to just see if I could get a difference. I changed them around to all possible combinations and no improvement was made. In fact I had saw a greyish image instead of the dark image I expect. I then realized I am going through my Denon for video so I took a look in there. I had it set to RGB Enhanced. It turns out that gives me crushed blacks and although the picture looked good it was really hurting my overall PQ. I tried the wrong setting first of YYY with a slight improvement overall. I then changed all three devices to RGB Full(enhanced on Denon). WOW!!!!!!!! What a difference. At first I was thinking it was only Avatar that made this difference so I popped in a few other blu-rays to see if there was any change. Dark Knight, Speed Racer, Sunshine, Angels & Demons and Kung Fu Panda all looked breathtaking compared to what I remember. I always thought that Colorspace doesn't change the image quality however I guess if you have a difference from Source, Video input and TV then you get either a gray image or crushed blacks. I can't wait to watch more blu-rays. I think I finally figured out why I wasn't thinking my Kuro was 'the best tv available'. Just FYI from my experience.
