Default Update: Now Best Buy Canada is trying to pull a '360' on consumers.

have a look at exhibit "A"

Flyer image on lower left with price of $399 CAN; Description can be found on the left side in the middle

If i hadn't already known that the 360 didn't have an HD-dvd drive, then this advertisement would have made me think otherwise. What a great way to mislead people!

at first it didn't make any sense to me why the HD-DVD version of 300 was offered without the HD-DVD drive included in the bundle. But now it all makes sense: it's a combo disc!

This ad is very misleading: making the consumer think the 360 has an integrated HD-DVD drive. is this possible, well ~40% of ps3 owners didn't know it could play blu-ray, it seems very well likely that MS or Bestbuy can mislead people into believing the 360 has HD-DVD.

Is MS/bestbuy trying to kill hi-def? people will pop in the 'dvd' believing that it's HD-dvd watch it and say "what's the big deal, looks like a normal dvd" of course it does, because it is.

or are they trying to '360' people into buying another hd-dvd attachment and have them ask "hey what gives 300 works but my other hidef disc doesn't work?" only to be later told they have to buy the hd-dvd drive attachment to run it properly and they probably will.

That's not good/smart business; it's sneaky and concieving.

Furthermore, selling the HD-DVD 300 boosts their numbers of sales/attachment units. closing the gap b/n the blu-ray version and HD-DVD. Will it be substantial, probably not, but cheating is cheating.

just when i thought 360 owners couldn't be 360'd anymore.
first it was RROD's
-then HDMI input
-HDD required for games
-and now this
- if you didn't know already the Halo 3 Special Edition xbox doesn't come with the game!

what next HD-dvd integration, a new system, what gives.

Update: I've got the actual copy of the flyer in my hand and do you want to know what the '*' reads?

"Can be played on any DVD player"

remember the asterisks appears as (HD-DVD*)

so does that mean HD-DVD can be played on any DVD player?

BB should know that they do have SDVD version of 300 in FullScreen format and WS format.

Cool

Could be a misprint because they are supposed to have that deal with the hd-dvd add on included, but for a higher price.

Dunno about you guys, but whenever I see something with an asterisk I always check the bottom of the page to see what it's referring to.

This could end up working in Blu-ray's favour! Think about it. Jo Blow walks in off of the street and buys the bundle. He gets home, sets up his Xbox360 to his Hi-Def TV. Then he decides to watch his '300' HD-DVD. Well, what do you know... he is surprised at how bad his HD-DVD looks (because it's really just DVD). "Well, let me see if I can get a look at Blu-ray somewhere". He visits a local retailer (hopefully Sony Store) and sees the difference. "WOW! What a difference from HD-DVD! I'll take one of those... and those... and those... and some movies to go along with my new equipment."

In a perfect world it could happen.

yep, i was there yesterday, they had about 9 copies of Batman on HD DUD, the most they had of any blu-ray was 3. Blu-ray looked picked over, hd dvd looked like it litterly hadn't been touched all day. There was two shelves of each format.....until i walked outside the aisle and there was a big four sided stand full of blu-ray in the middle of the aisle that you couldn't miss, all of this in front of two blu-ray players going on a samsung 65f series (yay!) (the bd-1200) and a sony xbr (the bdp-s300). Then way down the way they had a hd dvd player hooked up to a regza that had about a 3000:1 contrast ratio it looked like, and man it looked like absoulte sh1t. I watched aladin upscaled on a blu-ray player on a pioneer plasma, holy cow, can't wait til aladin comes to blu (in magnolia home theater). and don't forget the blu-ray that was playing at the front of the store, and panasonic had a nifty thing going to, where there was this big couch a panny hdtv and the panny blu-ray player i believe. so total was 3 blu-ray shelves: 2 hd dvd shelves, 5 blu-ray players running: 1 hd dvd player going. good news boys.

I just realized that the HD DVD of "300" is a combo, so buyers will get an HD DVD movie for free that they can watch right away. It might be an incentive to get the HD DVD add-on. Makes sense I guess.

yeah, that's what i wrote in the initial post. i thought i made it clear that it was a combo disc, but think of all the confusion involved.
