Like most of you, now that I have become a blu-blooded snob, I have little to no use for DVD. - Except for this fact.... I still own a DVD/VHS combo player and portable DVD player. I sold my one other DVD/VHS combo.
In the past, I actually burned my own movies I recorded from TV onto DVD. Those were my "back up travel discs" for the portable player. I didn't want to risk damaging my "good dvd's" in travel. ![]() My ultimate goal has to be realistic and reasonable. I suppose I will always own at least SOME of my original DVD's for the portable player and maybe be handled by kids or careless adults. ![]() But do I want to watch those movies now? Given a choice, no. But yes, I really do have some disdain for regular DVD now. I want blu-ray, and blu-ray only! It's odd gazing at my beloved collection and scorning them at the same time. Is this what divorce is like? What are your plans? |

I will hold on to my DVD's for a long time to come, as content is part of why we own a movie. Since Blu also plays DVD and CD, the old formats will live on as long as we have a viable 12cm optical disc, be it 1080p, 4K HVD - whatever. VHS had no such future, so I ditched them as soon as I could replace it. Now in 2008, I don't own a single VHS tape or a VCR. Back in the 80s, I owned a CD player, tape deck, a record player, a VCR, and an 8-track for the car. A lot of money and a rats nest of cables. Now PS3 delivers everything by a single HDMI cable - how things have changed.

I am using my regular DVD player, a Philips HTS 3450 HTIB as a receiver for my Samsung BD-P1200 Blu ray player. The best sound connection the Philips has is a digital coaxial line, so I use that. For now, the sound is good enough for me.
The HTS 3450 plays both Dolby and DTS (1000 w). Maybe in a year or so I will upgrade to Gen 3 or 4 Blu ray player, in which case I will get a proper receiver with 7.1 that can handle the TrueHD sound. |

Mine stays for now. I don't have any plans on replacing all that I have. There's also plenty in my collection that I'll still watch, but don't necessarily have to own on blu-ray. On the flip side, there are others I'd love to have on blu-ray but aren't currently available (Matrix, Star Trek, Star Wars, Bourne), so for now I have no choice but to watch them upscaled on dvd, which isn't great but not terribly bad, either.

I had 730 dvds. I sold over 400 of them for $3.00 each. That paid for a big chunk of my new tv. The other 280 that I was ready to part with got traded into my local FYE. They turned those 280 discs into a store credit of over $950.00. That started my blu ray collection with a bang.

VHS is gone with the wind but DVD's will indeed have a place in someone's home if they still want them as long as things are backwards compatible.
Still, with the improved picture and sound quality available I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to at some point replace most (if not all) of their collection with Blu-ray versions. |
