Criterion Sundays and Cybčle (1962)

Quote:
In this provocative Academy Award winner from French director Serge Bourgignon, a psychologically damaged war veteran and a neglected child begin a startlingly intimate friendship—one that ultimately ignites the suspicion and anger of his friends and neighbors in suburban Paris. Bourguignon’s film makes thoughtful, humane drama out of potentially incendiary subject matter, and with the help of the sensitive cinematography of Henri Decaë and a delicate score by Maurice Jarre, Sundays and Cybčle becomes a stirring contemplation of an alliance between two troubled souls.

Any idea when the pre-order will appear on Amazon? I'm excited for this one.

+1. It would be interesting to find out why she quit acting so early, and hopefully she talks a bit about Rapture.

From what I read her performance is very good in this...would anyone recommend Sundays and Cybele as a blind buy?

I really want to get this, just waiting for Criterion to hurry up and do their 50% off sale.

They've already changed it. It looks like Amazon listed the third party price by mistake. It's now on backorder with that seller, so I doubt they'll make good on my order.

That seller must have some sort of issue with this title. About a month or so ago I noticed Sundays was 4.15 brand new from a third party seller on amazon and very quickly ordered a copy. It immediately jumped back up in price and I assumed it would get cancelled. However, it showed up only a few days later! So even though I understand not wanting to get your hopes up I think you'll get your copy too.

Did anyone compare PQ/AQ with the Sony DVD release? Is there a noteworthy difference?

I have begun to "give up" on DVD and want HD, but still, the PQ on the DVD was very good for being a compressed/lossy format.

So, is there a huge reason to upgrade to the (awfully expensive) Criterion release? Because my suspicions is that they used the same transfer as Sony did a few years ago?

It's a new 2K transfer, so it should look much better than the old DVD. From Pro-B's review:

Quote:
This new digital transfer was created in 2K resolution on a Spirit 4K film scanner from a new 35mm fine-grain master made from the original camera negative.

OK. But how do we know for certain that this "new transfer" was done for the Criterion release and not earlier? Because the DVD release stated a "new 2K scan" as well.

Oh, I see what you mean. But Criterion says it's a new transfer, it wouldn't be new if it was the one they used for the Sony DVD, would it?

Well, I just reckoned their remaster is fairly new as well, considering what existed before was, in plain English, crap.

Regardless. New transfer or not, I am interested in a comparison. If someone has done one?
I could pop in the DVD in my player, of course, and judge from that. But it's not too conclusive.

Why the spoiler (lol)?
And why would it be too depressing? Because it depicts reality? The monstrousness in humanity? Which has, by the way, increased exponentially the last few decades, with extreme feminism and misandry, among other things. If you're a man, you're a suspect.

I just hate the final act of the film, Just p*sses me off. I suppose that was the point but at times I felt like I was being manipulated because they felt the story had to end in such a way. The film contained some "devices" that seemed cheap IMO. Maybe I will change my mind in a few years.
