I haven't seen this in a long time, so thought I would give it a rewatch. I was surprised to discover I didn't own it. I was sure I'd picked it up at some point. Long story short, I can't find it streaming anywhere and I guess the disc is OOP in the US and a copy is out of my preferred price range. I'd love to see it again. I remember really liking it.

The Nordic release from Warner is available for a reasonable price on various outlets.

I saw one on ebay that claimed to be region free, but I wasn't sure because when I checked the site here, that release didn't have and region coding information listed.

It's a Warners disc, you can basically count the number of region-locked BDs they've released on one hand.

Hmm, interesting. It clearly states under Playback: 2K Blu-ray: Region free.

But maybe that was added after you checked.

This site has four different listed Nordic versions of this film, but as far as I know, it's actually the same product for all the Nordic countries. And it is region free, as you said. Great film by the way, interesting setting and good casting, I've watched this several times.

I picked up the DVD for a song last year, haven't rewatched it, as I remember a casual pig slaughter at beginning that will be off-putting to say the least. I also remember that Sean's work near the end, when he is in the ____ing building, in anguish over what is happening, was some of the most engaging work he has ever done, which says a lot given he is probably my favorite actor.

Usually his best work is in lesser flicks (my alltime fave is the handball scene in OUTLAND), but that scene in ROSE is up there with his stuff in THE HILL and the end of THE MOLLY MAGUIRES, along with pretty much everything in his 'triple crown' of THE WIND AND THE LION, MAN WHO WOULD BE KING and ROBIN AND MARIAN. Oh, and he is letter-perfect in all of FRWL, which still constitutes as close to a perfect unit of entertainment for me as any film ever made (even with the wonky sound mixing in the first hotel scene.)

I just watched the 2019 TV series. I love the 1986 movie, but the series is an even better adaptation of the book!

Hopefully French subtitles aren't forced again though, like on the old French Blu-ray. Those were removable by ripping it and via certain players, but 'twas annoying. With a 4K disc, it would be even worse to deal with.

Seven7's 4K of Everything Everywhere All at Once has forced French subtitles for instance, so I'm cautious of pre-ordering until I know for certain.

Yeah- forced subs are so annoying. I wish that would be done away with.
(I mean, you can encode them to be forced on first play, and still have the option to remove them- no idea why they don't do it that way)
There are ways- like ripping and using BDEDIT to remove them- but, like I said- just encode them to be able to be turned off. Why is that so difficult?!!
FYI- I have seen hints of 4K editions of NAME OF THE ROSE from U.S. and Germany.
