India/Bollywood Sony India Unveils Blu-ray Product and Movies

Sony has launched new Blu-ray products and movies keeping the Indian market in mind. Blu-ray market is expected to grow up to 5 lakh units by FY2012. Sony India aims to capture 60 percent share and sell more than 3 lakh units, and also increase number of outlets to 4000 by 2012.

Sony has increased the number of Blu-ray movies available in India to 500 and has announced the price of audio-visual products starting from Rs. 9,990. Blu-ray enabled products will be available in a wide range of products including Blu-ray Disc players, Home Theatre systems, PlayStation3 and VAIO, which will provide High Definition picture and audio quality as well as internet connectivity to consumers.

“Sony Blu-ray is poised to take over the market as the new benchmark for the next generation of audio-visual entertainment. Only with Sony, you can enjoy new audio-visual entertainment concept through a wide range of Blu-ray products with base price of Rs. 9,990. As always, we continue to offer products and technologies that manifest innovation at its highest level as well as the ability to deliver the best customer experience to the world,” said Masaru Tamagawa, Managing Director of Sony India.

Sony claims that software enhancements like BD Live, Enhanced Bonus Views, Interactive features will help expand the appeal of Blu-ray products. With Internet Video, a service platform, user can enjoy various Internet video contents without PC. Users can watch internet-based content from video-sharing sources like YouTube, or from Video On Demand (VOD) on TV to which Sony’s BD Player is connected.

Keith Ribeiro, Managing Director, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, said, “Over the past decade, rapid growth in technology has evolved the way in which home entertainment and consumer electronic industry is perceived. A collaboration of these two industries can certainly promote cutting-edge media and entertainment devices. He added, “Blu-ray is paramount in delivering the best picture and sound quality and is a perfect complement for HDTV, the fastest growing category in consumer electronics. Hence, we have joined force with our counterpart at Sony electronics to help consumers discover the incredible potential of Blu-ray. We also plan to double the number of Software Titles to 500 by FY2010 to woo consumers. I am certain that this integration will further cement Sony’s unified presence as a leader in consumer electronics space.”

It's kinda hard for anyone to react to a 'ghost' announcement'. For, It actually remains to be seen whether Sony will do what is has been threatning to do, for the last 'TWO' years or for that matter what this so called "competitive price point" will be. As of today, all Sony titles are still selling at the old price points.

Default Sony launches Blu-ray players for mass market

Sony India on Thursday launched its first sub-Rs.10,000 Blu-ray player.

We will be getting stock of this for the indian market and willl be offering on our bollywoodblu-ray indian site soon with some free movies as a package ,we are in discussion with sony currently .

Sony India marketing head (audio visual product range) Kenichi Kawamoto said the company intended to maintain its market leader status and hoped to capture 60 per cent of the market for Blu-ray players by 2012.

“Our strategy in the Blu-ray market is based on promoting hardware growth and software availability simultaneously,” he added.

Sony was also making its Playstations, HomeTheatre systems and Vaio range of laptops Blu-ray compatible, Mr. Kawamoto said. “Consumers will be able to access Internet video without having to use a personal computer,” Mr. Kawamoto remarked. Referring to the BDP-S370 model, which is priced at Rs.9,990, Mr. Kawamoto said, “The model makes a Blu-ray player truly affordable in India.” “The Blu-ray segment has grown at an explosive rate, increasing seven-fold in the last year, touching 1.40 lakh units,” Mr. Kawamoto said. Sony expected the size of the Indian Blu-ray player market to be about 5 lakh units by 2011-12. He said Blu-ray players, like DVD players, “are likely to become commoditised as prices become more affordable for consumers.” Mr. Kawamoto said Sony enjoyed a “special advantage” because it owned 118 of the 500 plus titles that were available in the Indian market. Sony India Commercial Director said the company was the market leader in the Blu-ray software space. “Nobody has more titles in the Blu-ray format than we do,” he claimed

I have not come across a single Blu-ray player from even a single manufacturer in the showrooms that has been modded. On the other hand, it has been pretty standard for all DVD players to be sold modded to Region Free.
