United Kingdom Widows - TV (1983)

The miniseries "Widows," the basis for the new Steve McQueen remake film starring Viola Davis, will be released on BD on Nov 5:

https://networkonair.com/coming-soon...idows-blu-ray-

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Widows-Blu-ray/dp/B07FW4HSBF

The best news is that it will apparently be 4:3 windowboxed, not cropped to 16:9. Also, it is listed as 1080i, so hopefully it will be the original 25fps and not slowed down to 24fps for 1080p like LaPlante's later masterpiece "Prime Suspect" and so many other British shows.

The set includes the original 1983 series and the second 1985 series restored from original film elements in HD on 3 BDs, and the 1995 sequel reunion series in SD on 2 DVDs.

Ha! Typically I splashed out for the DVD in Network's sale a few weeks back, thinking this would never make it to Blu Ray!

I haven't rewatched it yet but I remember it being one of the better dramas of the '80s - much grittier than the 'high gloss' miniseries that seemed to dominate that decade. The production may have dated somewhat but I'm pretty sure the story & characters will still hold up.

The film looks good, but I'm really looking forward to seeing the original series first.

Hopefully, it sells well and convinces Network to put other crime dramas out on Blu-ray. I keep hoping and praying for Inspector Morse and Cracker, though I'm not sure if Network could ever land those licences.

A great series, it may have dated in terms of production but the writing and acting are first class. It was the breakthrough for the massively popular and influential crime writer Lynda La Plante who went on to major TV success with Prime Suspect as well as her many novels. Very good presentation from Network, both series and the sequel in one set.

This is fantastic news. I'm going to buy it day one and watch it before seeing the McQueen film. I always prefer to see works based on the same material in the order in which they were made.

Here's hoping McQueen's Widows is a bit better than the 2002 version starring Mercedes Ruehl.

I haven't seen one. I got the set on Tuesday, have watched eps 1 & 2. Looks good to my eyes.

Cover blurb says it was restored from the original camera negatives.

There are 4 eps apiece across 3 discs for Widows. Sequel series She's Out in SD occupies Discs 4 & 5. It looks fine.

It's a great series, I'm enjoying very much. I think I'd only seen it once before, and that's 10+ years ago.

You're welcome, hope you enjoy. 5 eps in now and loving it. Limiting myself to one per day in order to properly savour it & I'm having difficulties sticking to that.

Looks like that sequel series title is a potential spoiler.

In approximately 1.77:1 though, instead of 1.33:1, with the top and bottom shaved off. Unless I've not got my settings correctly set up.

Does anyone have a review or some caps for this?

Such a shame they did not go the while 9 yards and remaster She's out with this one since they included it with the set anyway.

Was the sequel series originally shot on film as well?

Recently thought about getting Network's Blu-ray release of Widows, as there are one or two other titles from the label which I want to get.
