United Kingdom It Happened Here (1965)

I screened this last night. It is a VERY unusual movie. The image quality isn't at all pristine, but it isn't intended to be. There is a remarkable attention to detail in the aspects that make it feel like a film made in the mid 40s. There is a newsreel at one point that you would think was real if they weren't talking about Nazi control of Great Britain. The bombed out rubble of London is totally convincing too. Amazing that they were able to create so much on such a modest budget. At the end of the film, the friend who watched it with me asked when it was made. Neither of us had any clue that it was made in the mid 60s.

I watched a couple of episodes of Man in the High Castle and it played like a comic book. This movie doesn't portray people as good guys or bad guys. It presents the predicament they're in and shows how they deal with it. There are several points where what is happening isn't entirely clear. You have to figure it out along with the characters on the screen. I really like that. This film is just as fantastic and has just as devastating things to say about British society as Clockwork Orange.

I don't know if I'll rewatch this one again soon... it's not an easy film to watch. But I'm very glad I took a chance and blind bought it.
