Sony's new BRAVIA Projector 8, aka VPL-WX6100ES, and Projector 9, aka VPL-WX8100ES Long Throw projectors are scheduled to launch early November, 2024.
I enjoyed watching Sony's two new projectors at their CEDIA Demo rooms and speaking with the engineers and product management. Sony will be giving us the BRAVIA Projector 8 and Projector 9 Long Throw projectors that were used at CEDIA for me to review and give them my feedback. Here's the link to Sony's BRAVIA Projector 8 and Projector 9 webpages. https://electronics.sony.com/tv-vide...s/p/vplxw6100b https://electronics.sony.com/tv-vide...s/p/vplxw8100b I also built our BRAVIA Projector 8 and Projector 9 webpages with additional information and I'm now working on building the.pdf spec. sheet. |

I hope Sony did not drop the legacy 3D support on the projector since that will be a deal breaker for some Blu-ray 3D owners. I do not see the 3D feature mentioned in the specs. I am hoping Sony just forgot to mention it in the specs and did not actually forget to include it in a projector that is over $32,000+ after taxes. |

I am sorry to say Sony and JVC's new projectors will not support 3D. I discussed this with Sony and JVC and both companies had very similar answers.
Sony and JVC focused on the new projectors performance and specifically all of the elements of image quality, which required many of the components to be upgraded and if they added 3D the MSRP would be higher than what they wanted these new premium projectors to be. After they explained the reasoning, which made me happy to see the advancements in the overall picture quality, I still recommended for them to add 3D on these new premium projectors. |

It would in theory only add $1,000 to $2,000 to the projectors to offer the 3D feature (maybe less then $500 for some models). It really is shortsighted for both Sony and JVC to drop the 3D feature. I was strongly considering buying a Sony or JVC projector because of the native 4096 x 2160P light engines without pixel shifting. And while DLP offers better 3D performance then LCOS and LCD projectors, it was still nice to have 3D on a LCOS projector. This now means that one has to buy a 4K DLP projector between $150,000-$400,000+ to get native 4K with no pixel shifting and with 3D technology. Some people do not want to spend over $400,000 or even over $100,000 on a projector. Under $35,000 DLP projectors are ideal for 3D but native 2K light engines only. Under $35,000 LCD projectors are ideal for low cost 10,000 lumens output, but only 2K light engine with no 3D. Under $35,000 LCOS projectors from JVC and Sony are ideal for native 4K light engines, but now no 3D. It is sad but it appears that 3D is dying on projectors now and Blu-ray 3D titles will most likely go out of production now. The native 4K light engine with legacy 2K Blu-ray 3D support was the key selling points on both JVC and Sony LCOS projectors. Since the year 2010 all JVC and Sony LCOS projectors had the 3D feature and it was first removed from a entry level Sony LCOS model a few years ago to save a few hundred dollars. Not sure what I will do now for a projector. I really do not want to spend $400,000 on a DLP projector to get all the features I want. Might wait for 8K projectors in 2026+ to see what happens to projectors in terms of 3D and 8K resolution. |

Both JVC and Sony make some amazing LCOS projectors with true native 4K resolution. However, since Sony dropped Blu-ray 3D on all their new projectors in 2024, if I was in the market for a new projector it would be the JVC NZ900 for $25,999 that still supports Blu-ray 3D. While Blu-ray 3D would most likely be around 10% of my viewing, it is a must have feature for people that enjoy movies in 3D quality.
The JVC DLA-NZ500 which does not have 3D, costs $5,999 and has a native resolution of 4096 x 2160P. The spec sheet for the BRAVIA 9 needs updated since one part of the spec sheet says panel resolution of only 3840 x 2160P. I hope that is a error since on Sony’s entry level XW5000ES projector when they dropped 3D they also dropped 4096 x 2160P. Quote “Additionally, the new imagers are native UHD, with a resolution of 2,160 x 3,840 pixels. This is different from older models, which had a resolution of DCI 4K, or 4,096 x 2,160 pixels. “ https://www.soundandvision.com/conte...-review-page-2 |

You also have Sony's 3D VPL-XW7000ES, and the 3D VPL-XW6000ES 4K HDR Laser projectors. These are very high performance Native 4K HDR projectors that support 3D.
I just increased our promotional sale on Sony's top two models that are both 3D capable projectors, VPL-XW7000ES, and the VPL-XW6000ES. |

Correct, the two high-end 3D Sony projectors I referenced, the flagship VPL-XW7000ES, and the one step down VPL-XW6000ES have just ended production last month, August, 2024.
The most important take away is that Sony and our company have a good supply of these excellent 3D high-end long throw RGB laser Native 4K projectors now with new promotional deals. The new models, VPL-XW8100ES, and VPL-XW6100ES will launch in November, 2024. |

With the 3D feature slowly disappearing form all consumer projectors. I wish there was a website that made a list of all the current in production projectors that offer the 3D feature (the list would have DLP, LCOS, and LCD projectors on it). But LCD and LCOS the 3D feature is disappearing with new models which leaves only a select few DLP projectors with 3D. |

The Blu-ray 3D format first launched as a 2K 3D technology back in 2010. The consumer electronics industry should have did a 3D mandate for all flat panel displays and projectors by a certain date. If a 3D mandate was made then it would only cost around $30-$50 to add 3D to each display or projector. Since over 100 million displays and projectors would use a common 3D capable hardware/software solution. The 3D mandate by the consumer electronic industry would allow for the manufactories of displays and projectors to use either active 3D, passive 3D, or no glasses needed 3D technology. If the FCC would have gotten involved with ATSC 3.0 broadcasts, then they could have mandated 3D on all new Televisions with a built in ATSC 3.0 tuner. If the 8K Association would have mandated 3D on 8K displays and projectors then consumers would have either native 8K 3D or 4K 3D. If the Blu-ray Disc Association does release a new 8K Blu-ray format in 2026-2028, hopefully the new 8K optical disc players will have new 3D technology that mandates all new 8K Blu-ray players being able to do 3D at either 8K or 4K quality.
But my point is if 100 million displays and projectors were made with 3D we are talking about a maximum price increase of $30-$50 and even less if the passive glasses are not included and sold separately with each display and projector. Unless something changes, in another 5 to 10 years 3D will be exclusive to IMAX and Dolby Cinema theaters, and other commercial 3D theaters, and 3D will completely disappear from the consumer market. While I prefer optical discs because of their lossless audio and higher video bit rate. In modern times in order for 3D to become popular, some of the streaming companies would need to start streaming MPEG-4/MVC 1080P with lossless or lossy audio. If the streaming providers offered Blu-ray 3D or even a lower quality 3D around 2K quality with low bit rates, that would help with the demand for new displays and projectors being made with the 3D feature.
