Are there any major Blu-ray movies that are overrated? I don't mean the MOVIE being overrated, but the actual Blu-ray.
For example, people saying so-and-so movies has great PQ and AQ, or amazing special features, when they really don't? Is there any specific movie(s) I should avoid buying on Blu? |

I think this question applied a lot more 3 years ago when every new movie release was called "reference" quality
![]() If anything i think what movies are underrated in this department is a far more important question as some movies have great transfers, yet get crapped on simply because they were made in 80's or don't have the look of avatar, or god forbid have grain. Either way my main concern is if the movie is a signifigant upgrade over previous dvd releases (catalougue titles), which 99 out of 100 times it is, and the few times they were not or actually horrible, got new releases out already. The rest we won't see new transfers until blu-ray becomes THE format. |

Maybe the audio?
![]() I'd agree about The Dark Knight. Granted it looks exactly like the IMAX print would, but that's not a good thing since it's DNR'd and EE'd to the max. But the IMAX stuff looks amazingly great. My choice is Planet Earth though. It just doesn't look like it's near today's standards. |

Of course it is, since actual artifacts and transfer problems get discussed here quite frequently. Except dark knight really did have a few tiny things, although i would not consider that to be over rated as it really was an overall beautiful blu-ray |

Well, there's two ways to answer this question. Many blu-rays represent a very tangible upgrade over SD, but don't look as good as the movie COULD look.
Then there's discs that just aren't a major upgrade over SD. I'm guessing you're looking for discs in this category, which tend to be older films. I find it best to be wary with releases by distributors like Criterion and Blue Underground, whose fanbase has a certain "they can do no wrong" mentality. Criterion's The 400 Blows, for instance, could pass for a DVD for the most part. |

![]() Most of what i have seen from Criterion has been great so far, but i definitely hear where your coming from. Fanboyism sucks in every regard, especially for the consumer that does not drink the kool-aid. |

That is certainly true of the cult distributors. The people inclined to review something from Criterion or Blue Underground are loathe to criticize the BD on the merits, simply being content with the obscure film finally being released. That also exists to some degree with older classics, which many seem to want to grade on a curve. If a disc looks bad, it does not matter how old or great the film is. |
