I don't know. But, if you download the PS3 Media Server utility program for your computer, you can stream any possible video file to your PS3 and the software will convert ANY material into a format that the PS3 can read. So, who really cares? Using PS3 Media Server is the solution to any codec issues you may have regarding the PS3 and its compatibility.

I've often found a loss in PQ when converting a MKV file with this program...but from what I read at the time, it had to do with the file I was converting and the audio track for some-odd reason...
but I can't remember for sure... |

From what I know, DIVX now officially supports the mkv container. So that would probably be the only reason the PS3 would get mkv support.
