Best "Upconverting" SD player? - Blu-ray Forum

Which on the Blu-ray players or Upconverting DVD player, do the best job Upconverting?

My Vote is: PS3...Its my 1st/only BD player.

My Samsung Upconverting DVD player was ... just OKAY @ best.

I think the Samsung 1200 and the Toshiba XA2 with the reon chip are supposed to be the BEST. The ps3 is pretty darn nice.

I had a Sony upconverting DVD player before the PS3 upconversion update and I gotta say, I moved the Sony into another room once I saw the difference. The PS3 is leaps and bounds better than my old Sony player.

Oh yeah, I had a Sony 75H, my Smasung BD-P1000 was better than it, and the PS3 tops em all.

same here, ditched my LG upconverting dvd player once I saw what the ps3 could do.

The ps3 is an amazing device.

I have the Sony DVP-NS75H and Samsung BD-P1000. I know how to calibrate my display for each player and the DVP-NS75H is better. According to every objective review of the two players I have seen including the popular site, The Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity, I have never found any disagreement with that opinion. Yours is the first subjective opinion I have read that offers any disagreement. If your BD-P1000 is in fact better, there is something else other than the normal player's level of performance that causes that outcome in my opinion. I do think the BD-P1000 can be better than most opinions I have read, but I don't think without firmware improvements it can ever be really good. The BD-P1200 is another matter and based on what I have read, I would consider it the best upscaling DVD player from either next generation camp.

Just search by Sony or Samsung to get only the players of interest. These guys are very thorough and very good at what they do, the tests are meaningful.

The new Oppo 971 I got does an amazing job of upconversion! It has won several awards and viewing it's picture is all the evidence you need for an explanation. PLays every disc format except HD discs. Only $229!

I think you mean Oppo DV-981HD, otherwise I agree. Beware, it doesn't work well with many plasma displays and others that are adversely affected by the macroblocking enhancement errors attributed to the Faroudja FLI23210 chip. I love my Oppo DV-980H and believe it is the best budget DVD-V/SACD/DVD-A player and it uses a Mediatek chip and no Faroudja.

My Samsung was ok made the video a little darky,

The Ps3 upconverts them better than other players i've seen.

My Denon 1930CI with its Faroudja chip is pretty spectacular. I haven't A/B'ed it with the PS3, though.

The best DVD player is still the Denon DVD-5910 based on everything I have read. Many of the better players for the next generation formats such as the Toshiba HD-XA2, Samsung BD-P1200, and Sony PS3 do really well with DVD and play true HD, so I sure wouldn't buy an expensive DVD player unless I wanted the best SACD/DVD-A/CD playback in addition to DVD-V.
