The Uncharted Evolution: Series Visual Comparison

Breaking technological barriers in console visuals, animation, and voice-acting has all been part of Naughty Dog’s monumental PlayStation 3 exclusive franchise Uncharted since Drake’s Fortune. After a half decades work, the developers at Naughty Dog continue to astonish gamers with Uncharted’s lush detailed environments, realistic animations, and cinematic stories following charming characters.

Equipped with an evolved version of the Naughty Dog Engine, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is no exception. According to the developers, the new engine enhancements have allowed for stereoscopic 3D, improved level destruction, and speed optimization for SPU usage. Even multiplayer will find new improvements to gameplay modes and small touches of detail added to online maps.

Drake and Chloe's pictures for Uncharted 3 look a bit pixelated, but at least the skin and clothing textures have somewhat improved.

I don't think they did anything different. Nate and Elena just aged.

I don't recall that bottom scene in Drake's Fortune, and I just played through most of it. Had to be the very beginning or the very end.

That looks like Chloe before she got replaced with Elena. That looks about when they're forced to jump out of the plane.

That's an early version of Elena in the seaplane.



There's really early artwork of her somewhere but I can't find it now.

Up until the fall of 2005, although we had already strong look for him dialed-in, our hero Nathan Drake’s personality had been hard to get a handle on for a lot of the team.

Around that time, someone had the idea that maybe Drake should be kinda like Johnny Knoxville from Jackass. So we modified the character design for Nate slightly to a design loosely based on Johnny, reflecting Knoxville’s cynical sense of humor, which we eventually moved away from a bit, and also to reflect his essential coolness and goodness.

We were all able to immediately grasp and get behind the tone that this idea embodied and from then on people really started to understand Nathan Drake.

Unfortunately the comparisons aren't very accurate being a mix of in-game and publicity images which have been polished up with anti-aliasing. A better comparison would be revealed once the game comes out and someone captures in game stills for all 3.
