Default DC Universe question?

So I was looking for some games for my new PS3 and found D.c. Universe . I did so reading and noticed it said there would be a $14.99 subscription fee why the heck do we have to pay $15.00 bucks to play this game?

You should probably expand your gaming interests. Just a suggestion.

The best way to describe it is a very open, player driven world. You will be in the game with many other players in the same world simultaneously. Comparing it to GTA really doesn't apply because as open as GTA is it's still a closed world and it's just you experiencing that world. In an MMO the world is ever-changing and you experience that world with many other people doing PVE (player vs environment) quests and PVP (player vs player) activities.

Imagine if you had a world like GTA single player, but you dumped all the multiplayer players in it all at the same time so they could chat, interact, help each other out with missions, or decide to start a traditional multiplayer "match".

Also imagine that Rockstar continued to add additional missions, quests, stories, etc... in GTA, but didn't charge for in as individual DLC - anybody playing would just automatically get all the new stuff.

That's hopefully gives you a good idea of what an MMO is. (From a shooter fan's perspective.)

MMO= Massive Multiplayer Online

I personally have never played one before, but I'm sure you've heard of WOW. I am tempted to play The Old Republic though...

Thank you for that, I might go ahead and give it a try.

I must say I was surprised to find someone who hasn't be exposed to MMOs, but to each their own.

I'm definitely looking forward to it, but to be fair, the million dollar question will be how much support it gets. If new missions get added every 1-3 months with substantial area/content patches every 6 months or so, the monthly fee will be well worth it. If you look at what WoW added or patched each year they probably could have charged much more for it as DLC. (Big raid boss areas, new missions, etc...)

The one downside of MMOs though is that you never know how well it gets supported until it either does or doesn't. If you want in day 1, you have to make a bit of a leap of faith that they are just looking to rape you of every dime they can.

why is that such a surprise? Unless someone is into PC games, the chances that they are into or have played MMOs is pretty low considering they are barely non-existent on consoles. FFXI is probably the most notable example and that never got big, only building a niche following which most passed on.

Considering how embeded it's become in geek culture, I figured that anyone who is into sci-fi, fantasy, computer gaming, or video gaming at all at least knows in general what it is. I'm not a shooter fan and have never played a CoD game, but have enough passing familliarity with the franchise to know what MW and MW 2 are. Prior to ever getting into an MMO myself I was at least familiar with the genre from press, advertising, and friends that played everquest.

I didn't mean it as a bad thing, I was just surprised.

Uh-oh. Not proud to be one of your enablers on this one.

MMOs can be rather addicting.
