Sony Planning to Announce Paid PlayStation Network Membership at E3?
A source within the company claims an optional, Xbox Live Gold-like subscription fee is coming to the PlayStation 3.

By Dustin Quillen, 05/17/2010

PlayStation Network If rumors prove true, Sony could be planning to introduce a paid membership service for the PlayStation Network at E3 this year. The company has hinted at bringing some form of premium subscription plan to the PlayStation 3 numerous times in the past, but now VG247 reports that a "highly-placed source" within Sony has confirmed the announcement for this year.

According to the anonymous tipster, Sony's answer to Xbox Live will not remove any existing services from free PSN accounts. Rather, your yearly subscription fee -- expected to be "less than £50" -- will go towards brand new features and bonus downloads. "There's nothing in the premium package which will gimp regular PSN users," claimed the source.

One example given is free PSN games for members every month. The insider said that subscribers will be offered the choice between two to four different titles each month, noting that, "If you work it out, PSN games cost an average of £6-9 each, so over a year you're basically going to be breaking even."

VG247's mole also outright denied rumors that the system's long-awaited cross-game voice chat feature would be exclusive to premium members. "I can tell you now, 100 percent, that that's not the case," he vowed.

E3 2010 doesn't officially kick off until June 15, so we've got a little under a month before we get the facts straight from Sony. We'll keep you updated on any other tantalizing leaks and rumors until then.
