First a little background...
I have sampled various Onkyo and Denon models over the last few years, and I have read a document called Audyssey Tips and Tricks that has been very helpful with the other set-ups. Also, my system consists of JBL front/center speakers (2 X ES90 with a frequency response down to 36 Hz, 1 X E25 with a fr down to 80 Hz, ES250 12-inch driver). When I tested out the new Denon 2310 last night and ran the Audyssey EQ set-up, it ended up sounding very odd compared to other times I have run it on other systems. First, it set my front & center speakers as Large/Full Band. I tend to subscribe to the theory that it is normally "best" to change this setting to Small and bump up the crossover to 80 Hz, so I did that. (I read through Batpig's Denon guide which was very helpful and confirmed much of what I've seen (heard) to be true also). Also, it left the "channel level" of the fronts and center lower than usual. The fronts were at -3.5 db and the center was -2.5 (the sub was - 7.5). For the most part, dialogue reproduction is very solid, and the low, low bass (I assume LFE signal) is actually quite deep and strong without being "boomy" (tested a few scenes on the Independence Day BR). What sounds lacking is what I would call the higher bass or mid-range. When I put on a live performance scene on the Crazy Heart BR or the regional competition from the season finale of Glee (yeah, I'm a Gleek) it sounded like something was "missing". There was no distortion or bad sound, but the music seemed to have no bass support and honestly it did not sound any better than if I was just listening through TV speakers. In the past, the only complaint I've had with Audyssey is almost TOO much fullness/bass that I've had to compensate for, so I am a bit shocked and confused at this sound. I tried switching the modes in the Parameters field, but nothing improved the sound. I ran the test tones to make sure nothing was too funky coming out of the speakers, and they all sounded very consistent. Not really sure how to attack this troubleshooting project other than running the set-up again and praying for a different sound. Do any of you have any ideas what I might be doing wrong? (PS I did nothing different with my mic placement during the testing from other times I have run it) Thanks a ton in advance for your help! |
