Actually, from what I've seen, Disney clearly states what packaging they are releasing for their blu ray movies. On the header of the slip or the case, it will usually say "BD + DVD" or "DVD + BD". Whichever one comes first is the type of packaging. This is pretty much Disney's way of organizing the types of cases.
The strategy for this is for people who still collect DVDs, to buy those cases and basically plant Blus into their customer's homes. I agree though. DVD packaging is so bulky and unattractive. |

I prefer blu-ray cases for consistency sake but if dvd packaging was the only choice like funimation titles, I wouldn't cancel. Quality artwork is the key. It makes any case look good or bad.
Most rag on the black dvd cases. If clear dvd cases were used primarily, that would be freaking sweet. I love it when dvd's come in clear cases. I'd take them over blu-ray cases. Last edited by Hatter; 04-29-2011 at 01:36 AM. |

I left a post on another thread mentioning how I've attempted to "blu-ize" ALL my movies by moving my old DVD's into blank blu-ray cases (and transferring or making custom artwork for them). So I'm definitely not a fan of the reverse - blu rays disguised as DVD's.
I think in my case (pun intended), I just really love the look of blu-ray cases. I love the translucent color it provides when all your cases are uniform on a shelf and all the sizes match etc. So having some films in blu cases, while others are in DVD cases, next to others that are in digibooks etc is exactly what I try to avoid from a display perspective. I'm definitely a Disney fan though! Last edited by Popcorn_Bliss; 04-29-2011 at 01:57 AM. |

I doubt that. Still too much money to be made, to kill off the format. When DVD came out, people were thrilled to dump VHS. They were bulky and looked like crap compared to DVD. The jump from DVD to Blu-ray isn't as dramatic to a lot of people, or they just don't care. So I can't see DVD really ever fully dying off. At least not for 10+ years.

In other words, if I want to watch Jaws for example, I don't have to wait for it to come out on blu or look at an empty slot where there is no "Jaws" in my collection. In effect, I can turn my DVD copy into a "blu version" from a storage standpoint. This is especially good for some of my favorite foreign classics that might otherwise never see a blu release. If they do come out, then I'll surely add them. If not then I just use the DVD in a blu case and all is still well, aesthetically speaking. It only gives itself way if you go to watch it...LOL. But I'm already aware it's a DVD. For me, it's more about just making sure I have SOME form of the movie first and foremost. The way I see it, Blu-ray is preferable but a DVD disguised as a blu is still the next best option! ![]() It's sort of my personal storage equivalent of how the AFI Top 100 Films list is maintained. As the titles come out on blu, the titles go from black font to blue. But at least every title (in some form) is present. But it does save space storage-wise as well. I can't really say how much because I didn't start to file away my "Top 200" movies in this fashion until recently (when I fell in love with the blu cases and started buying blus). Before that, my DVD copies were largely just stored in drawers but not in spine-viewable library fashion, as I'm doing now. Last edited by Popcorn_Bliss; 05-03-2011 at 09:12 AM. |

Blu-Ray cases are very nice, smaller, thinner, but I think that they are cheaply made because they can crack and break very easily. DVD Keepcases are much more durable than a Blu-Ray case.
I don't like it when Disney puts out two different packagings for some of their movies, one in a Blu-Ray Case, and the other in a DVD Case. When I buy a Blu-Ray I prefer to have it in a Blu-Ray Case, Some stores get more of the DVD Packaging more than the Blu-Ray packaging. |

I cant believe how huge DVD cases are compared to blu-rays. after buying blu rays for so long, dvd cases look even bigger than before.
