Well this flick got some bad press cause TC did not speak German. Really? Every Sci-Fi flick has everyone speaking english. Star wars, Star Trek blah blah blah.
Every time I watch it it gets better. The PQ/AQ is undeniably awesome. So just the story is left to judge. And this story sucks you in. Just My Opinion. Peace |

The feature-length documentary on the real story was worth watching on a History Channel level--
As for Cruise, however, Singer seems to be so close to the material that he never really lets us in on the key elements of what the heck is going through the guy's mind: In literally the very first scene of the movie, his character decides that Nazism Is Bad, for reasons we can assume but are never told; he spends the rest of the movie hiring what seem to be the riskiest and least effective people to help him, and when others ask "Are you sure he'll go along with it?", Cruise's character simply answers "He will", and the matter is over with. Oh, sure he will...(coo-coo, coo-coo ![]() Cruise's performance of the character is just so out there with no apparent motive or basic plan that when circumstances start going awry, there's no sense of fate; I just ended up thinking of a line from MST3K: "....WHEN is this guy going to show some simple competence?? ![]() |

Yes, I agree, it's a fine WWII thriller. Not a favorite, but it's definitely worth owning. I think the biggest weakness is Singer's direction, which is uneven and frankly a bit amateur. He's enjoyed the most undeserved career in Hollywood, thanks to a single, early fluke ("The Usual Suspects"). The extremely talented cast and servicable script is what saves the day here.
I think Stauffenberg's motives were rather clear, I certainly wasn't wondering throughout the film what his impetus was. He may have conspired with 'risky' officers, but I simply felt he was using what he had at hand. If picking favorites, I'd have to give "Operation Valkyrie" the edge. But both have their distinct strengths and weaknesses. |

I agree. After Cruise's antics before the film came out, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to watch it. However, I totally forgot about couch-gate and his crazy Xenu-loving and thoroughly enjoyed the film. Even though you know how it ends (or, more accurately, how it DOESN'T end), it's still a gripping film.
Definitely will pick this one up on Blu. |

(Albert Speer once claimed Hitler discussed burning Berlin to the ground to keep the Russians from getting it, which caused Speer to consider his own failed assassination attempt.) Singer, however, seems to be approaching the story from a persecuted gay/Jewish perspective, and suggesting that Stauffenberg woke up one morning, had a spiritual awakening, and decided to join the Good People-- Schindler, maybe, but the military officers' motives were a little more complex in light of circumstances than suggested. |

That's why I was surprised I was able to get as deeply into this film as I was able to - and why I can't wait to see Knight & Day. I thought knowing he was bat-crap crazy would prevent me from buying him in the role, but I did, lock stock and barrel. |

I rented the BD once, thought the flick was ok and never felt the desire to watch it again.
Cruise's performance wasn't very memorable, too much of a good-nazi clichée imo. I'd preferred a little bit more ambiguity for this kind of topic. |

Yup, I really enjoyed this too. WWII historical stuff just fascinates me and a conspiracy against Hitler just pushes it over the top. When Cruise's character was executed in the courtyard of the Bendlerblock, he stood on the exact spot where Stauffenberg was executed on July 21, 1944, which must have creeped him out quite a bit
