If you love movies, then Daybreakers is a must own, IMO.
I say this while not even really liking the movie. I thought Daybreakers would be an action flick with horror elements, but it was one of the bloodiest goriest movies I ever saw. And the film had too many plot holes for me. I consider this blu a must own because of the outstanding making of documentary. Daybreakers offers one of the most extensive documentaries on the film making process. The only other releases I've seen at this level have been Blade 2 and Lord of the Rings EE. The documentary offered intimate behind the scenes look from the very beginning in 2006 when these two brothers cooked up this idea for a script. While I know from previous docs that film making is a difficult and time consuming process, this one just really gave me a new appreciation for the tight rope frustrations and challenges that occur especially on small films where budgets are so restrictive. For example, one of the brothers talks about flying 23 hours straight to New York to have a 25 minute meeting with Ethan Hawke and then fly back. That is the type of sacrifices you make to get the movie done. Another part explains insurance bonds and how the directors lose a lot of money if they fail to get the shooting done on time. To make matters worse, a deadly virus breaks out on set, and sickens many of the cast and crew. The producer also breaks his neck in a car wreck. One prop, William Dafoe's bow gun, had to be redesigned a mere day before shooting. Apparently, the directors wore many hats to save money, even doing some of the special effects themselves in an apartment. I just find it really interesting to see firsthand the tremendous amount of work and effort to bring a simple independent vampire movie to the screen. |

Okay movie at best. Cool sort of "twist", but kind of boring 75% of the time.
Liked 30 Days of Night a lot better. |

This year has been pretty underwhelming when it comes to horror movies (Shutter Island, The Wolfman, Splice), especially in comparison to 2009 (Orphan, Trick r Treat, Carriers, Zombieland) but I was pleasantly surprised by Daybreakers. It was nice to see someone try something different with the vampire genre for once.
I'd definitely take it over the first Blade (a film which reaches its peak in the opening and then peters off) or Underworld (which hasn't aged particularly well). Last edited by mpstjohn; 06-28-2010 at 02:38 PM. |

Not at all. I only like horror if it is mixed in with a lot of action. I enjoyed the Blade movies and Dawn of the Dead remake because of this element, even From Dusk till Dawn. Daybreakers offered whimpy crossbows and a lot of severed heads.

One of the worst movies I've ever seen. haha. The part when he was just laying on the hospital tables for a few seconds and then randomly exploded was the first time I ever laughed hysterically out loud in a movie theater. That movie could come with a ticket to hang out with the crew for a day and I still wouldn't buy it.

i enjoyed the movie. i liked the idea of it, found it had funny moments, found it well made with good video quality and excellent 7.1 audio quality. it is not going to be a movie for everyone. i am very forgiving and i simply enjoy things for what they are and not comparing them to others all or most of the time. i have no problem watching this again and enjoying it again. while it's not the best thing i've ever seen, it is definitely not the worse nor anywhere near it either!

I actually liked it as well. I was not expecting much going in. To me the best part of the film was the mood that was set in the first 30-40 minutes. I liked the idea of the reversed vampire society, blood / coffee shops, society coming to life after dark, etc. It set up a pretty surreal mood for me.

It was pretty entertaining and was developing well the first half (great atmosphere). 2nd half was average at best. Overall I enjoyed it.
And yes it had some pretty funny seens. I was disspapointed in Sam Neil's character. I expected him to be ultra creepy, have some great lines, etc based on Event Horizon but he was bland. I get your point about the extras, very cool to include all that. |
