Germany What are the must-have German imports?

Is there anything released in the German market worth importing to the US? (I have a region free player)

I'd say The Italian Job. The German version is tons better than the US one, with a better transfer/encode and better audio track.

A high-quality metal casing that is extremely collectible to some. They are highly popular in Germany (I believe the company originates from there) and come in different variations from different vendors (including Amazon.de).

Some eventually go "out of print" and can fetch high prices on eBay.

There is a Steelbook discussion thread on here where you can find much more information.

In general, since the USD to EUR conversion makes German importing pricey, I'd go only with those titles that have appeared in Germany but have not been announced for a US release.

The English Patient
BD for example is English-friendly and contains all the extras from the CE DVD release, so if you want that film now, Germany is an option, but a US release is obviously fortchoming.

Dances with Wolves Blu-Ray (German Import, Region B, Kinowelt)
It does have English subtitles but they are not CIH friendly as they are half in - half out of picture if that is a concern.

Cheers,

The Painted Veil ("Der Bunte Schleier")

A beautiful transfer of a beautiful film. The disc has DTS HD MA 5.1 for both the original English track and a German dubbed track.

I'd also add my recommendation for 'Dances With Wolves' (the extended cut).

Cheers,
Just to be clear, Dances With Wolves only has English subs when Native American language is spoken. And I agree, fantastic transfer.

Just from my personal taste in movies: Silent Hill, Crank, Perfume: Story of a Murder. I don't know how any other releases of Hannibal are, but I thought the German VC-1 and DTS-HR 6.1 disc was pretty good. I was happy I made the purchase.

I just got Rob Roy and Dances With Wolves today and am very pleased with both. The 12 year old DVD of Rob Roy looks hideous so this is a major step up.

Director-supervised transfer, better encode (technically at least; I've read the actual visible improvement on the German is pretty small), DTS-MA, new director commentary and making-of featurette, region free and entirely english friendly with *removable* French subs!

HALLOWEEN [2007] and 1408...one of the very limited ways to get the superior theatrical cuts in HD...and they're both in nifty Steelbooks, too. Allegedly, HALLOWEEN II [2009] will follow suit in being the only/one of the precious few places to get the theatrical cut in HD.
